Photo size question

Hi

My wedding photographer finally gave me the photos on a disc, however they are at a resolution of 5x4 at 400dpi, he says this is the resolution he gets all his photos in.

They will print a 7x5 at 300dpi fine,

what size would I be able to print upto with that resolution.

Can you post up one of them so I can check the exact resolution for you. Not disputing what you have said but that seems a funny res and size to get from a wedding tog.

It sounds like he is palming you off with a fob story. If you paid for full copyright then the images should at least 5-8mb in size with a res of 300dpi.

You can upscale in CS3 but it can degrade the quality if the original is a bit shabby.

Like I said post up an example and I will have a look for you.

Ok, the image is 96dpi with all exif stripped out hence the small file size. The image is 1605 x 2019 pixels and according to CS3 that is coming back at 22x28 inches in size at 72dpi but according to my Fujifilm scaler thingy you will get a 10x8 comfortably. You can go bigger but quality is shifting from excellent to ok, then at 18x12 it is coming back as poor.

Again if you paid for the copyright to your wedding images, get on the phone and demand the un-cropped - un-edited images sent to you ASAP. From a wedding tog these are low res versions.

wingnut what did you use to check all that information, I can check the image size in CS3 but how do you know it comes back at 22x28 at 72dpi, and isnt 72dpi too low to print? Whats a fujifilm scaler?

In CS3 if you hit "ALT+CTRL+I" that will open up the image size info box, all the info is in there. And your right 72dpi iay too low to print big, as i said you will comfortably be able to print that image at 10x8 and have excellent print quality.

The fujifilm thingy is an app i use to upload my image direct to the print houses Fuji film printers. When I upload an image you can select sizes, paper type etc and it give you a three coloured feedback on whether the image is poor, good or excellent for the print size selected. Most decent print houses who allow upload do it. Even Photobox have a similar thing.

Thats exactly what I was about to ask, is there anything out there that allows you to do the same as the fujifilm thing. Can that fuji one be run offline so you can check before uploading images.

looking at the image you uploaded it's a 3.2 million pixel image which would give you a 5.3 x 6.7 inch print at 300 dpi
to get a 16 x 12 print ( a3 ) your talking a print resolutuon of around 130 dpi which would look soft close up
you could try one of the many resize programs out there ( some of em actually do a half decent job ) and double it size but i would be more interseted in the original photo's at full resolution

Pros like to keep the full size prints for this reason and usually give you a set of images that are too low to do decent sized prints from, when they charge £20 upwards for a large print its hardly surprising. You will probably need to pay a ridiculous amount for the original files.

The weddings I've done I just gave them the lot, but then im just a cheap amateur
