Woman banned from driving after stealing mobility scooter while drunk
Sozzled Amanda Leaff stumbled out of the pub, spotted a mobility scooter nearby and declared: Thatll save the taxi fare.
So she hopped on the buggy and headed off at a snailpace 2.4mph to her home more than 10 miles away.
The journey would have taken her four hours, but it was abruptly halted by police who saw her driving erratically along a road.
She was breathalysed and found to be more than twice the drink-drive limit.
Yesterday, the 46-year-old paid for her mad moment when she was banned from driving for 20 months and ordered to pay s240.
Leaff swiped the scooter from outside an Asda where it was parked up for disabled customers.
She and a pal, who had broken a shoe heel, spotted it when they left a pub in Oldham, Gtr Manchester.
The pair jumped on the buggy and drove to a mates house. Leaff then set off alone for her home in Stretford.
Her solicitor Stephen Krebbs told magistrates: It was an awfully long way for her to go. She managed to get two-and-a-half miles until she was stopped. It was a surprise she got as far as she did. It was a risk to herself and other road users.
Leaff, who admitted taking without consent and driving the buggy while drunk, told police she did it to save her the taxi fare. She said she intended to return the scooter the next day.
After the Oldham hearing, a spokesman for Asda said: Every scooter taken from a store is a vehicle less for our disabled shoppers to use, which is obviously a big inconvenience to them. They arent designed for road use.
They are best suited to flat surfaces, as in supermarkets, due to the very low wheelbase.
