Anyone rate these laptops?
I need something small for whilst at work and traveling, Just for email, Msn, browsing, Documents and other misc shit.
Not after something super powerful just something nice and small and handy.

Sick to death of using the Internet on my phone, its awful.

There's a few different models.
2GB, 4GB 12GB and 20GB.

My Budget is £200, so I can count the 20GB model out straight away, Seen a few on amazon, Prices look ok there.

IF you stretch another 100 quid get the 901 edition. Superb battery life, wireless N. I'm trying to source a 901 linux edition for work and travelling myself.

Personally I wouldn't bother with wireless N (802.11n) at the moment. Its still in draft standard, and wont be finalised until 2009 (I think), so every company will have a slightly different variation in how they define the current standards.

So even if you get an ASUS EEE PC with 802.11n it might not be compatable with an 802.11n Netgear router, even if it works fine with a Belkin 802.11n router....

Cool! Good to read that you're happy with it. I liked the smaller screen size on the 901 which is why I didn't go for the 1000.

Did you get a carry slip-case with it?

Mate I love it, use it as my main work PC now as well.
And yes it came with a free carry case.

I'm thinking of getting one for basic ms office use as well as mobile internet/email as I'm getting fed up with my htc universal (smartphone).

Few questions:

1. I've heard there is a 9?? model coming with built in 3g comms - worth holding out for? (I do know how crap 3g gprs is, but it will either be this way or via a usb plug in)

2. If I stick xp on it, will it be as good as a proper pc? (obviously not in terms of speed or size), but will I easily be able to get this on my work domain through wifi/ethernet , any major incompatibilities, as well as anything obvious I may have missed.

3. How is life with the screen? I was well chuffed with my htc until I remembered most of the web is designed for 17" + monitors these days. Is surfing a complete pita or is it quite happily usuable?

4. Also with the small keyboard - I type at around 60-80wpm using two fingers and thumbs on both hands. I'm worried prolonged typing with a small keyboard is a perfect receipe for pains in my hands/wrists.

5. Speed. I know it won't be able to play crysis or anything, but how slow will it be? My last laptop was a p4 celeron 1.7 - I'm guessing it shouldn't be a lot slower as that really was slow?

6. Also SSD vs HDD - I know HDD is bigger, but I was maybe thinking of getting the biggest ssd with a humungous sdhc card for storage on the basis that SSD will be quicker and more solid. Any major speed differences? Anyone had the hdd fail from being knocked around a little?

7. Also was wondering for real life battery usage. Apparantly asus released an update for the battery tables or something - wondering how long I could expect to continuously use one.

8. Final one - this one I think I may be pushing it a bit. I thought it would be a great portable multimedia player. Good size for videos on the tube.

However, I thought it would be neat if you could get some good quality headphones that plugged into the usb socket that also has an inline switch for volume/track selection, and even a screen for track info if possible. This would mean eee pc could be in a laptop type bag but be used as a walkman. Anyone heard of anything like that?

i bought a asus 1000 on tombotts advice (after seeing it) and i havbe to say it is the moistest piece of hardware ive ever got. Dont be lame, go for the linux version and stick ubuntu eeepc on it. Paid 279+vat from misco for 40gb ssd version, quality. Battery life of like 6 hours too awesome. Bit of a fiddle to get wifi working after youve put ubuntu on but let me know if you get stuck i have some links that solve it easy.
