    Default Nikon D40

Looking around at cameras, and this keeps popping up as a good cheap amateur camera. How is this compared to the more expensive Cannon models (350D/400D)?
What is the lens availability like? Would it be better to wait out for a Cannon?

If I'm honest I would prefer a Cannon, but I don't know why, they just strike me as a 'nicer' camera. These may sound like stupid questions, but it is quite a big, wide, daunting world for a numpty.

Cheaper Nikons don't have Auto Focus built in meaning you have to pay more for lenses I believe.

My Bro has bought the Sony a300 so it might make sense for me to get the same as we can pool lenses etc, I dunno, there's lots to consider!

Is the 350D still recognized as a good camera, or is it a bit outdated compared to the 400D?

tbh I would forget about that panny one and spend the extra cash I am seriously impressed with my 400D but yea the 1000D is the latest one out, I think Baronvon has one of those supposed to be very good I would grab one of those over the 450D which was only slightly better than the 400D

Am sure someone will come along who knows much more than me on these and tell you for sure

1000D vs 400D? The 1000D and the 450D are either side of the 400D.

the 350, 400 and 450d are all basically the same camera, only increases in megapixels and a few software features separate them so you wont see a massive difference whatever you buy, obviously the 450 is 2 revisions higher than the 350, so theres bound to be quite a few refinements though. The 1000D, as far as i can tell is just a cheaper camera than the 450D.

As for the D40, , when I came to buy my first DSLR i weighed up the Olympus 4something, the Nikon D40x, Canon 400d and the Sony A100, lack of auto focus put me off the D40, poor kit lens (and higher price) put me off the 400D, the 4:3 system put me off the olympus and high iso performance put me off the Sony but in the end the inclusion of in camera image stabisation and the dynamic range optimiser of the Sony made me go for that.

Well I decided to opt for the 350d, the jump in cost to 400d was a bit more than I could justify (by which I mean afford) and the lack of auto focus put me off the Nikon.

1000d is the entry level cannon SLR, personally I find it great as I had a nikon compact camera before it.

Jessops doing it for £400 (1 month ago) and that was with a 18-55 mm lens (standard lens from what i can tell)
i got them to throw in a £50 bag and a £16 58mm UV filter for 1/2 price.

It has a 7 point auto focus and the lens has image stabliser on it

standard stuff as in preset modes , landscape, portrait, macro, full auto and then a whole range of shutter speed, aperture settings, ISO (light) settings

reviews are good for it but they all harp on about the price however they say the street price is £550 upwards.... pah fools lol

You cant go wrong with a 350D as a first SLR. It will be a good 6 months to a year before you start to notice the enhancements the 400D/450D have to offer and how you would use them to improve your photography. By then you will be well and truly bitten by the bug and will most likely plump for a 40D or something similarly specc'd since you will have bought better lenses.

I have the 400D and I love it. I have to agree the Kit lens is somewhat on the disappointing side however with the right lenses on the camera, it is capable of fantastic images. I really need to replace the 18-55kit lens and retire it to the box.

How about a nice Sigma 24-70mm? Great thing to replace the kit lens with.
