My other half is a teacher and they get so many "sick days" a year, like you suggest Mr.James... she has only had about 3 in the last 5 years, but some of the staff abuse it something rotten. One of her support staff takes days here there and everywhere and always comes in after her quota of freebies has gone.

If there was a "sick bank" as such, there should be a financial reward come the end of the year. If you've not taken any days you should get paid for the days left in your "sick bank" as extra as a reward for being a good honest employee and not a work dodging scruffbag!

Also, Blaggard you are right. As a person working with and serving the general public I think it should be enforced for staff to be off without fear of retribution because it ain't nice having someone talking to you etc when they are coughing germs all around.

I've had 4 days off in 11 years (2 of which were for operations) but then I own the company. At my previous job I had 3 days off in 5 years, 2 of which because I smashed my right wrist in half. Was signed off for 6 weeks but went in anyway (H&S laws would probably not let me back on the premises these days!).

As an employer I've heard some right old bollocks, had a guy this summer take 5 days off for a wasp sting.

We pay a weekly "attendance" bonus which is lost for any lateness or absence. If they are late or absent they also lose some other weekly bonuses so a day off can cost them up to £200 in lost pay. However it is discretionary so if we feel it's genuine we can pay it.

Damn, I feel your pain.. or rather, I feel the pain you experienced. I had the same complaint and had my Gall Bladder removed July 2007.
