The thing to watch out for is if you get the recovery/re installation disks that you get them for the correct version. iMac disks will not work on a Macbook etc...!!!!

    hi mate

thanks alot for the reply, the mac is all new to me...

i have the original tiger 10,4 restore disk the mac mini came with. i was thinking of taking out the 60gig and leaving the operating system on the harddrive alone.

then getting a new 320gig harddrive and loading leopard on that as a new internal drive...

will this work and are there any pitfall i should be aware of??

    thanks alot

    That should work fine..

Again, unlike PC based operating systems, you don't need to worry about any additional driver support when upgrading your operating system.

So, get the hard disk fitted, get the operating system software installed and away you go!

Just to expand. Any retail version of the OS will work on any mac. However the discs that come with a mac when you buy it will only reinstall to the same type of device.

Also if you download one, make sure you have some dual layers discs and its about 8Gb and cant be split over more than one disc.

Think you're going to have to copy it over to the Mac mate and burn that from there if possible via the Disk Utility tool - anything else and they don't normally boot

You will need to install 10.4 then bang leopard on the a disk using the mac and then install. Id recommend doing either an archive and install or an erase and install when going from tiger to leopard, the upgrade option is not reliable with what it leaves once finished.

Or what you can do is use a USB SATA caddy and put your 60gb with tiger on in there, boot to that drive by holding alt when starting up and burn the image from there, then do a clean install on your 320gb hdd.

If you do the clean install of leopard, one thing you will need to do is install the iLife suite (iphoto, imovie, etc) from the tiger install disk 2, or get a copy of iLife 08 and install that.

    Cheers
