Default Assisted suicide footage to be screened tonight.

    Taken from SkyNews.

Images of a terminally ill man ending his own life in an assisted suicide will be screened in a television programme tonight.

Craig Ewert's death will be shown on TV

Documentary makers were allowed to film the final moments of 59-year-old motor neurone disease sufferer Craig Ewart.
The Sky Real Lives programme Right to Die?, shows Mr Ewert drinking a fatal dose of barbiturates, which have been prescribed by a local doctor.
Within 30 minutes of the overdose, he is dead.

    Craig Ewert's Decision To Die

Before making the journey, he said: "If I go through with it I die, as I must at some point.
"If I don't go through with it, my choice is essentially to suffer and to inflict suffering on my family and then die.
"Possibly in a way that is considerably more stressful and painful than this way."
Mr Ewert, who lived in Harrogate, knew his disease would eventually kill him - almost certainly by stopping his breathing.

His widow, Mary, has defended the decision to allow the cameras inside the controversial Swiss clinic Dignitas, which helps people to commit suicide.
Assisted suicide is legal in Switzerland, with certain conditions. But it is illegal in Britain.
The programme will be broadcast on the same day that an inquest opens into the death of another British man who died at Dignitas.
Paralysed rugby player Daniel James, 23, was injured when a scrum collapsed on him. The promising hooker lost the use of all of his limbs.

If someone comes and tells us 'I have had enough of this awful life and I would like to go now,' we should have the opportunity to help him.Ludwig Minelli from Dignitas

According to his parents, Mr James found his life unbearable. They helped him travel to Zurich in September this year.
The Director of Public Prosecutions has decided not to pursue a case against the couple.
Dignitas was set up by Ludwig Minelli, a lawyer who rarely gives interviews. He said a dignified death is a human right.
The clinic has helped more than 100 people from Britain to end their lives.
But, to some religious and ethical groups, assisted suicide is wrong.

Dr Rob George, from Care not Killing, said Mr Ewert's death was barbaric - a natural death is nothing to fear.
"The vast majority of patients with motor neurone disease do not have a choking, unpleasant, suffocating death. That's just not true. So I feel sad and quite angry about that. This man need not have gone through this."

Right to Die? is to be shown at 9pm tonight ( 10/12 ) onSky Real Lives

This is such a tricky question but I'd have to say it is the right of the individual and that other peoples moral and religious beliefs can't be allowed to interfere.
The legal problems affecting friends and family who assist make it very difficult indeed and any "legalisation" needs to be carefully framed to avoid unscrupulous beneficiaries killing helpless people for personal gain.

Pretty much, yes. People who assist run the risk of legal action as it is but if it is made easier then there is an added risk of people killing for gain.

The people who have a problem with this are the religious groups, NOONE should try and push there belifes onto others... therefor if they dont like it dont do it.... but if i feel the need to end my life due to being in constant pain etc i will.

i totally agree with this, but the legal issues would be a nightmare. I don't have sky so will miss the programme but should be very interesting.

Thats the thing though Hodge, what if you can't end it alone? If you (not you personally of course ) were ill to the point that you can no longer do anything for yourself, and you have to involve another person to do it... should that person be prosecuted for murder after they've helped you to die?

I thought the person wanting to die had to be of sound mind and be assessed by a doctor before any assisted death could be considered. Obviously this limits the extent of death for benefit, but cannot negate it completely. Legislation does need to be brought in to protect the innocent (innocent in my mind at least).
As Craig Ewert said, it is not only his suffering, but the suffering it causes his family. If you are terminally ill and in pain, why prolong the life. Surely this goes against the medical ethics as it causes suffering and pain, not relieving it as should be the case.

OK, whatever your views are, but why does it have to be televised?

I think the guy is entitled to do what he wants with 'his' life ,when all is said and done we are all born to die . Would you rather have the choice or wait till fate deals its hand ,especially in his situation as he was probably going to sleep thinking he wasnt going to wake up the next day for a long time before this decision ,chronic illness is sometimes worse than a death caused by the likes of terminal cancer etc ,as they get the same pain ,only thing is they dont die after a short time

I plan to pitch the following proposal to Mr Murdoch.

Terminally ill patients are invited to star on Sky's Russian Roulette reality show. There is an advert break between each pull of the trigger and 20% of the advertising revenues are given to the victims family. The longer they last, the more money the family makes.

Anyone watch this then? Was it as boring as it sounded? Could have used a Saw type machine to do the business or took him to that Hostel in Bratislava.

I hope she felt the back of your hand and was treated to a night of silent scornful looks before showing her the error of her ways in the bedroom by destroying her ringpiece.
