Stick with XP 32 bit
Youll loose out on 1 gig as itll wont be seen
but everything will work and you wont get issues
The 8800 GT isnt extreme enuff to run directx 10 anyhow so pointless going for vista just for the directX 10
Linux.
Seriously though what do you want to use it for?
Chances are Linux will be your friend.

personally id use vista (go for the ultimate pointless missing out on anything for the sake of it) ive got xp and vista dualbooting and i may be the only one but i quite like vista (although that could be the fact it looks alot like my debian install lol) im not saying xp isnt up to the job but after a couple of weeks on vista xp looks really really old
edit - ignor me go with tombotts suggestion you wont regret it
its a decent enough card to run far cry , crysis etc on a p4.The 8800 GT isnt extreme enuff to run directx 10 anyhow so pointless going for vista just for the directX 10
with that new processor am i right in saying that'll it run like a dream??
Linux i wouldnt know where to start, maybe a project on my old system to check it out thou.

Check out the directx V10 bits. To be fair the extra graphic splendour is lossed as you running round in farcry 2 and you stop to look at a beautifully animated tree blowing in the wind. Vista is an awesome OS, but full of bugs with older SW. Perhaps the new OS soon to takeover vista will be the best OS to use
i thought that too but windows 7 i think will just be a relaunched (with service packs pre applied) vista and be what vista should have been, maybe its cos ive really not had a lot to do with xp that i prefer vista
you can if you feel the need already try windows7 (ive seen it kicking around the ng's
It'll provide you with endless fun when it doesn't work the way it should for some random reason, usually to do with updated drivers, when it wants old ones. Or when you want to run something old and it would rather cause a conflict with itself over nothing...
I'm not a fan of vista.
Server 03 or 08 all the way.
DJ OD
Id move over tomorrow to Vista BUT it will not play fair with
Most of my old games like Diablo II
SAM (The Radio DJ internet Radio program)
The whole network at home (5 pcs connected up to mine) to utilize the tinterweb
My Ultra scsii raid 320s wont run unless in compat mode
My webcam
to name but a few

i dont think ill try windows 7 not got the time, just need a working pc, vista sounds like a pain if its got loads of bugs. are we talking constant crashes in games??
edit
vista wont play operation flashpoint or Armed assault i bet??? gonna have to stick with XP.
i have server 03, thats upstairs obviously running my server but dont use it for much apart from storage and watching shit on my bedroom tv

vista x64.
if after a week you're having problems just downgrade to vista 32, xp or linux by formatting and re-installing.
after a couple months on vista you'll hate going back to xp. it looks so dated to me now.
Fisther till she can't breathe. 64 bit for all your RAM. Go on it tastes great.
Yeah i'm on vista x64 and it used to be that it wasn't well supported with drivers etc but its fine now not had any problems with it really. With vista you get dx10 as well for gaming which isn't available to xp. I do have problems sharing files with people on xp though so be careful. I can see all the shares from vista but i can't from xp. Even still i get 5kb transfer rates so its a waste of time. Vista to vista it goes much quicker.
