I much prefer the first one, it has a real brooding drama to it that is less so in the second, which has a a bit of lens flare in the borrom corner and the top right needs burning in a bit to rein in the brighter patch.

In a perfect world, gulls in the first would have been even better, but its a great enough shot in my opinion as it is.

Rules, such as the rule of thirds are guidlines not rules, and like all rules are meant, as they say, to be broken. I like how the lighthouse is still able to be reflected in the shoreline of the first one too.

Two beautiful images. I like both of them. As Bilbo says, the first has a rather brooding feel to it however there's also a tranquility about it too. The second one is also a stunning image. The fiery sky and that huge breaker in the background is like something out of a movie.

Personally I can't pick out of the two which would be my preferred image because both are superb but I have to say, I like the completely central lighthouse in the 1st image. The RO3's broken perfectly.

yep 1st one for me too, a moody image with a sense of calm, like the second one aswell a bit to much dead space on the right still i dont mind a bit of burnout gives a sense of realism to the pic, shAMe you couldnt get a bit closer to the end of thaat pier, well done

Love the two of them ,the first edges it for me due to the neutral tones ,composition and the rule of 2/3rds is just a guide as posted earlier ,one other thing is that no matter how you take a picture it will be looked/scanned at top left to bottom right (one of the weird things programmed into us with reading ) ,also items coming in to the picture are generally referred as moving right to left and vice versa for going out of the picture (generally speaking).

Ghost, apart from the fact that the 2 pics are very good in their own right, it's great to see more of you thinking about the shots rather than getting into the habit of shooting a scene 30 times from every angle to cover all bases. Nothing wrong with taking a few shots at different settings to ensure you get what you're after but buying a DSLR and then just snapping away at everything is pointless.

My preference is with the masses on this one. The first shot has much better colour balance, and the highlights/midtones work very well together as apposed to the second image where its more highlight vs shadows and your eye struggles to decide whether it's supposed to be a silhouette or not. I also prefer the central positioning of the lighthouse in the first, as it balances the composition. Well done on ignoring the rule of thirds, which most photographers will tell you can make or break an image, meaning it has it's place but can also ruin things.

Look forward to seeing more from you Ghost...

They both do it for me, I am a sucker for sunset / sunrise shots as I just love the oranges, reds etc etc in sky but the first also has a unique appeal to it. Like Neo said, nice one for thinking away from the traditional rule of thirds composition, sometimes it can fall on it's arse horribly but on these occasions it works.
