Hmmmmm hope they still have Tweeky!!
Odd Lot Entertainment has officially announced that they are developing a Buck Rogers revamp and have set comic book author and filmmaker Frank Miller to write and direct. This isn't actually the first time we've heard this news, as it was first reported as a rumor back in May. Now it looks like it's confirmed, with Odd Lot acquiring the rights from Nu Image/Millennium, who won't have any day-to-day involvement on the project. Buck Rogers first appeared in 1928 as a comic serial. Buck was a pilot who awoke in the future and "introduced Americans to outer space as a familiar environment for swashbuckling adventure."
This should be good news, as I think Buck Rogers is the perfect character to be given a hyper-stylistic makeover from Frank Miller. However, with the early buzz on The Spirit already saying it's one of the worst movies of the year, I'm not sure I'm excited to see him making more movies. Under the careful guidance of Robert Rodriguez, he's not that bad. But I would rather see Frank Miller get back to comic books than have him destroy more classic characters. Miller will apparently give Buck Rogers a darker story and include "many of [his] signature visual elements and themes, such as corruption and redemption."
While I haven't seen The Spirit yet, I can't get excited by this news and probably won't be excited until I see some footage. I hope Frank has learned from The Spirit, though I doubt it. Only time will tell…
