Default Only one key for new car

A workmate of mine bought a second hand car a few weeks back. He only received one key with it. Apparently the car was owned by the NHS in Manchester and they only had one key. They are trying to locate the spare key but told him if they couldn't find it they would "do him a good deal on a replacement".

I don't think he should have to pay for it and think the garage should pay full cost for a replacement. I recently took out insurance for my car and had to sign a form declaring if my car was ever stolen I would have to produce 2 sets of keys. I'd assume my mate would have to do the same.

What's the general consensus of opinion and does he have a right to demand 2 sets of keys?

I've never had to declare that my car has two keys, and to be honest maybe he should have raised the issue with the seller before buying.

As above - unless it was specified at time of sale, your mate has no legal reason to demand anything related to any extra keys.

Yeah I know but it's not an extra set of keys is it as all cars well new anyway are provided with 2 sets. Thanks for the replies though. I was just trying to save him some money.

I must say I've never heard of the '2key' question in my 30yrs of motoring, I changed to Norwich Union last year and they never asked me owt like that.

I have a sports car that could be targeted by specialist car thieves. Maybe that's why I had to sign this 2 key declaration. I was insured by Academy insurance last year but wasn't asked this. Maybe it's an Adrian Flux thing.

I have just had a quote from AF on a car we are buying next week, 2 keys wasn't even mentioned.

As for what rights your friend has on 'demanding' 2 sets of keys on a secondhand motor....absolutely sod all I'm afraid.
Understeer is when you hit a wall with the front of your car
Oversteer is when you hit the wall with the back of your car
Horsepower is how fast your car hits the wall
Torque is how far your car sends the wall across the field once you've hit it

the whole reason for providing two keys in the first place is a spare, im assumeing the spare is in use and the original got lost, get a new one cut.

When I bought my motor I only got 1 key with it (other one is prob still in Japan lost somewhere), and I have to fork out about £150 to get a new one cut and re-programmed.

It wasn't mentioned when I was quoted either mate but they sent it out when I had to sign the agreement.
