Default What Was This Year's Best Game?

It has been another exceptional year for gamers, with a huge number of quality titles.

How highly did Grand Theft Auto Rate?

Honourable mentions go to Burnout Paradise, World of Goo, Zack & Wiki, and Geometry Wars 2, but here are my 10 gaming highlights of 2008. - Darren Turpin

    Spoiler:

    10. Mirror's Edge (PC, Playstation 3 & Xbox 360)

Opinions remain divided on this innovative first-person adventure, but those who embraced its unusual approach were rewarded with a stylish and entertaining spin on the platform genre. Aside from the stunning visuals, it was the game's sense of momentum that impressed most: running and jumping has never felt so good. Here's hoping the disappointing sales won't scupper hopes of a sequel.

    9. Top Spin 3 (Playstation 3 & Xbox 360)

With punishing controls and a sharp difficulty curve, this was the tennis fan's tennis game. Those looking for Virtua Tennis-style 'pick up and play' action might have been frustrated, but for sheer depth of gameplay and exceptional multiplayer action, Top Spin 3 was in a class of its own. It would have been the sporting highlight of many a year, but EA had other ideas.

    8. Left 4 Dead (PC & Xbox 360)

In a year where cooperative multiplayer gaming really showed its stuff (see FIFA 09, Gears of War 2 and more), Valve's zombie apocalypse shooter embraced the concept in a way few other titles have been brave enough to try. With scarcely a single player mode to mention, this was a game that relied almost entirely on players working together while fighting their way past wave after wave of charging undead. Gauntlet meets 28 Days Later? Oh yes.

    7. Braid (Xbox 360)

What initially looked rather like a Mario clone instead revealed itself one of the most inventive titles of the year, blending intricate time manipulation puzzles with an intriguing plot referencing The Manhattan Project. Though consistently brilliant throughout, the game's conclusion was something else entirely: comfortably one of gaming's most impressive moments of narrative exposition. Not bad for an £8 Xbox Live download title.

    6. Fable 2 (Xbox 360)

Some might have complained it was three years late, but Fable 2 was the game that finally delivered on all of the first Fable's promises. With a simplified, inclusive approach, this was a role playing game which worked with the player, rather than against them. And for all its open world brilliance and inspired social interaction, it was the strength of the narrative which really shone through.

    5. Grand Theft Auto 4 (PC, Playstation 3 & Xbox 360)

We're still waiting for the Xbox 360 downloadable content, but fortunately there was plenty to enjoy on the disc. Liberty City thrilled; Niko Bellic was the series' best lead character to date; and the online modes offered surprisingly well thought-out multiplayer action. The big question now though, is how can Rockstar top this?

    4. Gears of War 2 (Xbox 360)

As if there weren't enough shooting action in the first Gears, a 'bigger and better' policy for the sequel resulted in more of the same - only with a greater sense of scale and some impressive boss battles. But where Gears 2 really impressed was in the cooperative online mode, Horde, which saw up to five players working together to repel wave after wave of terrifying enemy attacks. As intense as multiplayer gaming gets.

    3. FIFA 09 (Multiformat)

If FIFA 08 was the game that finally dislodged Pro Evolution Soccer's crown, then FIFA 09 blasted it clean off, before plucking it out of the air and volleying it into the back of the net. With unrivalled gameplay and EA's usual slick presentation standards, this was the best 3D football game to date - and the 20-player online mode just had to be played to be believed. Co-operative gaming at its absolute best.

    2. LittleBigPlanet (Playstation 3)

In a year where the Xbox 360 line-up went from strength to strength, LittleBigPlanet was the PS3's poster child - and as it turned out, a serious contender for game of the year. Essentially a drop-dead gorgeous platform game, LittleBigPlanet's biggest draw was its level creator, which allowed players to produce their own creations and upload them for others to play and rate - essentially YouTube for videogames.

Thankfully the community didn't disappoint, with some jaw-droppingly inventive creations appearing almost immediately - and they're still coming now. To those considering the PS3: this is the system seller you have been waiting for.

    NUMBER 1 !!!
    Spoiler:

    1. Fallout 3 (PC, Playstation 3 & Xbox 360)

Who would have thought trudging around a drab, sparsely populated, post-apocalyptic wasteland could be so much fun? On paper it might not sound like Game of the Year material, but the brilliance of Fallout 3 didn't surprise anyone who played developer Bethesda's previous title, Oblivion.

From the first moment to the last, this was an incredible experience: a mature and thought-provoking game which continually asked the player questions about the kind of character they wanted be, demanding only that they live with the consequences of their decisions as they rippled through the world around them.

But the real treat was the game world itself - a startling vision of a Washington DC devastated by nuclear war, its iconic locations testament to the destruction: some empty, broken husks; others transformed into makeshift defence shelters against the monsters haunting the wastes.

The standout in a year full of brilliant releases, Fallout 3 was a title that delivered on every level. Game of the year by some margin.

totally agree with the number 1 choice. It does have bugs and some of the dungeon type levels can get repetitive but I can ignore these since the game is so good. Truely immersive and absolutely huge with great attention to detail. This game took 50+ hours of my life before I finally got round to finishing it and even then I still had a fair few side missions left I hadn't tackled. it's been ages since I really got obsessed with a game until this game came along.

Will buy it on PS3 when it drops down in price and play it all over again.

I thought GTA4 was rather disappointing. Very pretty and diverting enough but lacking any real heart.

Fallout 3 is really rather marvellous. It's actually kept me from completing Gears of War 2 which is also obviously worthy of consideration. Dead Space is ace but I'm only half way through.

I haven't had the pleasure of Littlebigplanet, but I've heard that it's brilliant. It's certainly regarded as one of the best platform exclusives so make of that what you will. Likewise Prince of Persia.

Although I think it was released in the fourth quarter of last year, the best game I've played this year is Mass Effect. Ridiculously good game. It takes cinematic gaming and all round production values to another level. Majestic. I can't wait for the second instalment.

Actually the PC version came out this year, so that counts! Mass Effect it is then. Incredible graphics, brilliant voice acting and characterization. A detailed and comprehensively involving universe. A fucking brilliant story, ace AI, and a sweeping score that just about pisses on every film I've seen this year. Like I said, majestic.

You also get to bang a blue alien bird. That's right.

last year, was all about call of duty 4 and world at war, if most of you are honest, its got to be the most played online games last year.
gta 4 was good, but i found the lack of piss take a bore, they need to go back to the vice city days.
saints row 2 is a great game also, co op is very very good.
got fallout 3 but not played it yet, so cant comment on it
forgot to add streetfighter 2 HD, if you have live, you need this game

Dead Space, Tomb Raider: Underworld, Mario Kart Wii - all worthy contenders for a title. Special mention to Mirror's Edge, the idea behind it is fantastic, just a few little bits made me get too frustrated for it to be game of the year, but I think if they do another one it could be a truly fantastic game.

Game of the year though for me, FIFA 09. Biggest let down of the year, PES 2009.

All formats, it has to be Kings Bounty the Legend. For anyone who missed this, and loved the original, it is a must have.

Prince of persia was just such a surprise tbh. Wasn't a fan of the last two installments but loved this one, just finished it the other day and wanted to carry on finding light seeds!
