A pensioner has been forced out of his home after authorities discovered he was sharing the two-room flat with 1,700 budgies.
Birdman of Berlin said he started with just a pair of budgies
The 60-year-old said he had initially adopted two birds because he felt lonely - and that nature had since taken its course.
Officials in Berlin were called to the apartment after neighbours complained about the noise and smell.
Once inside, they discovered the birds were living on perches installed along the walls and were free to fly around as they liked.
The flat was "littered with faeces, feathers and leftover food", according to vet Margit Platzer.
It took her team more than seven hours to catch all of the birds with nets, she added.
The budgies had to be taken to animal shelters, including some outside Berlin after facilities in the German capital could not take any more.
Their owner is also looking for a new home, after his flat was declared no longer fit for human habitation.
The retired man could face charges for endangering the animals' health and safety.
