When I put a game or Blue Ray into the machine the screen goes blank and in the top left corner it tells me that what resolution it is setting itself to. Can I change this? Is there a setting that leave it on 1080i/60?

you can uncheck the resolutions etc that you dont want in the display settings
settings > display settings > Video Output Settings > HDMI > Custom > and untick what you dont want here.
For hd resolutions it defaults to 60Hz
