µTorrent kills my internet connection

Since Saturday, whenever I use µTorrent my internet connection slows to a crawl before completely dying. Having sought advice on the net I've limited my download/upload speeds and number of connections but so far to no avail.

Even when I exit the program I still don't get my internet connection back, I have to reboot the computer for that to happen. I've tried resetting the router/cable modem but that does nothing, so I think its software related.

Any ideas? I used to use bitcomet, but certain private torrent sites have banned it and so I'd quite like to stick with µTorrent if possible.

It sometimes bloats up on my laptop.

Even if something is downloading really slowly the whole internet becomes very sluggish. I've no idea why I guess it's something to do with my setup maybe.

Someone else was telling me the same thing, something like the whole file being downloaded being cached in ram which can be headache if you have a few loading. Dunno how true it is, as he's a spark who's only started using a pc this year!

Have you by any chance installed any OS updates? I had similar problems a while back, Microsoft issued "fixes" to some system files that limited the number of connections to limit activity by any worms, denial of service attacks etc. While this may help fix this it broke the peer to peer connections as it just got gradually slower and slower and the only way was to either disable the network connection and re-enable in windows (didn't always work) or reboot.

Check your event log in windows, if you see event id 4226, this is most likely why.

Do a google search with that event id and there are 3rd party patches available to "fix" the issue.

Note if you're concerned about security, you could run the torrent software on a virtual PC, rather than patching your pc, Microsoft Virtual PC (free download from MS), does the job very well. And if you have to reboot, just reboot the virtual pc and not the actual pc.

this could be caused by several issues...to try and narrow it down...first setup port forwarding on your router..instructions here..http://www.portforward.com/english/r...4/Utorrent.htm

if that doesn't help try lowering maximum global number of connections to 200? 100? 50? Lower? (Can be found in Preferences > Bandwidth)

• Try disabling DHT (Can be found in Preferences > BitTorrent)
• Try disabling UPnP and NAT-PMP (Can be found in Preferences > Connection)

if these dont help let us know what symptoms still exist there are a lot of settings that can be tweaked to try n solve the issue tbh

it's probably your router, it can't handle the amount of data

I had the same problem with mine, on 20mbit connection it would screw up the router

I had the same problem and i was using home plugs. Every time i went on utorrent my connection just died i tried everything under the sun to get it back up and working but the only thing that worked was a restart. UTorrent would for a few minutes before dying and killing the internet.

Changing my network plugs to some new ones did the trick. Very strange problem though. Best bet is to get someones laptop and connect it to your router and try utorrent on there. If theres works fine without crashing the internet try reinstalling your wireless drivers or look into buying a new wireless card. The chances are its got nothing to do with your utorrent configuration.

Another thing to try is to go to another stable version of utorrent and try that. Try using a rj45 cable to connect to the router directly or any other method of connecting to the internet thats different to what your using now. Good luck mate.
