Default Alternative to Windows Media Centre for XBOX?

    Hi

Just restoring my system from the Vista update that fukd my PC!

I only have Vista Home Basic which doesn't include Media Centre which I want to use through my XBOX 360. (I had it all running pretty nicely before the fuck up with a dodgy Vista upgrade to Ultimate)

I'm just wondering if there's any alternative (free) software I can install on the PC which the XBOX will still interpret the feed as being from Media Centre.

I know you can get plenty of Linux media centre stuff but I think you usually need to load the software on the xbox as well.

    Cheers for any help.

Loaded Windows 7 on and tried to set up the xbox, only to discover that the newer version of media centre is unable to connect to the xbox. :-(

Ok, that's good news. i'll tell you exactly whats happening then.

I've got as far as entering the code numbers from the xbox and, while configuring, the xbox seems to interrupt the process with the message "cannot connect to xbox live". I don't remember this being necessary before but it aint gonna happen cos I'm banned!

I've run all the network/media connection tests which are ok. I've made sure media sharing is active on the PC. In fact, I am able to play music etc through normal media sharing on the xbox.

It was when I went to the help page: www.xbox.com/pcsetup

    and got the message:

Cannot Connect the Xbox 360 console to This Computer

This computer is currently running a newer version of Media Center. The computer must be running Update Rollup 2 for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 or Windows Vista in order for the Xbox 360 console to connect.

To learn more about compatibility with Windows Media Center, visit the Media Center website.

That I made my last post.

    Any thoughts are welcome.

    Cheers,

You have to run media center on you windows 7 machine first and choose the folders you want to share otherwise it will not work.

Media player sharing is slightly different to media center sharing for some reason!

Yes I have. The code is for the media centre as opposed to media sharing which is different.

Yup, did that. I've also removed the xbox from the pc and the pc from the xbox and started again to no avail.

It does seem to be the fact that the xbox tries to connect to live during the configuration process. It does it every single time and the error warning interrupts the process. I have no idea though, why it's trying to do that.

    Confused!

Is your 360 got the latest updates? Ant was telling me that you used to need a code but on his new 360 it didn't need the code. Was wondering if yours is banned and can't get the latest dash updates etc?

That's true, it won't have the latest updates. Is it possible to download them manually?
