Default Just got myself a Canon 1000d

    Hi,

Firstly, I am used to "point and click" when it comes to Photography.

I have just replaced my Fuji S9500 with a Canon 1000d. Which I am made up with, but it has far too many features for my limited knowledge of Photography (non existent).

I primarily use a camera to take a wealth of photos that I use to create adverts for cars, boats, Motorhomes etc that I have for sale (my skills are poor but it works for me). example. http://img176.imageshack.us/slidesho...492773t1h.smil

I am hoping to be able to improve my skills with plenty of practise and much reading.

I only have the standard lens that came with the camera(EFS 18-55mm) and I would rather not spend a fortune on kit that I won't ever need or use.

Can you suggest anything that would be handy for me with a view to my intended use (Wide Angle Lens for the inside of tight spaces? If so what should I be looking at?)

I also have a Canon 299T Speedlight (with even more settings that I don't understand). Would this be compatible with the camera and if so am I ever likely to have a use for it?

    Thanks in advance

The next best thing for your photography is to get out there and use it.

Seriously, don't rush in to buying budget lenses too quickly or you'll end up with duff kit that wont even compete with a good P&S camera.

Take your time with what you've got and start to learn what sort of photography you enjoy before making the large outlay on good quality gear.

If you want one more piece of kit I would say a decent tripod.

    Hi,

I actually have a tripod that I used a couple of decades ago with a Video Camera.

The thing is 99.9% of the time it will only be used to photograph vehicles of some sort or another, I would like to get the best out of it for this type of use.

That said, I do want to learn more as we are going on a 6 week tour of Spain in the School hols and it would be nice to capture some decent memories on Camera.

    Cheers.

p.s Thanks for the heads up re my avatar Leo.

you can never go wrong with the nifty fifty - Canon's own 50mm prime lens. it's about £50-£60 and is perfect for indoor shots and portraits. It's open to F1.8, so lets lots of light in, even in quite gloomy situations (such as the current economic climate!!)

As said above by others though keep practising and after a while you'll get an idea of what lenses you'll really need.

Someone who needs it I suppose. Glass is always worth more than the body. The lenses I own will be kept more than the thing I attach them too and I bought them with this in mind.

The same person who spends £300 or £700 etc. on a lens. It all depends on what you want it to do.

You'll be surprised.. the more you get the bug, the more you want different lenses because in order to achieve the best results in different types of photography, you need to use different lenses.

Believe me, the camera is NOT the expensive bit

Still, get out there and take some shots. (says me who's hardly posted a thing recently... time constraints )
