Default Shell V-Power Diesel - worth the cash?

I've always put super unleaded in my petrol car, simply for the fact that the increase to mpg far outweighs the small cost increase.

Now I've just bought a diesel car, but not seen super diesel anywhere before. Was at a Shell garage the other day and saw V-Power Diesel along side normal diesel. Does anybody know if this is worth a 10 minute drive to the nearest Shell station plus the cost increase?

I'm not hugely arsed about power, but I like the economy. Wee power boost always nice too though

    'tis a 150 4cyclinder TD btw.

Hi i would say yes to your question.I used to be a taxi driver and a high percentage of the drivers used v power diesel and they all said they got better mileage and better performance. The only real way of fiding out is try it for a week or so and compare the difference to what you are getting presently..

I never found any great difference, but then I already have the power, and I don't get a great mpg (well, no less than 29, avg 34) due to driving like a tit, but that's just the way I like to drive it. The Vpower never made any noticable difference to either power or economy.

They did a test on Fifth Gear a few episodes ago and they said it did improve the mpg so it is worth it.

They also did a test that made the VXR Astra appear quicker than it's 888 diesel sibling, but that was fixed so I don't believe anything they say anymore.

Did they say by how much as a percentage? You would have to weight up the percentage increase as opposed to the percentage cost increase and work it out.

To be fair tho, the nearest one to us is on Great Northern Road, next to Maplins, the only other ones that sells it up here are out by the airport and on Wellington Road (22 mile round trip), so it's a bit of a drive to get some if you want any.

That might outweigh the MPG gains. A good 15 mile round trip to the nearest one. Theoretically it should be better and give less engine wear, better performance, more resistance towards knocking, etc.

I used it and didn't see a difference.

However I use Millers diesel additive and I get an extra 20 miles to a tank with that... car smokes a lot less also when planking the foot down.

thanks for all the replies guys - a fairly mixed bag of opinions

I guess I'll just need to try it, but as herman says the nearest place is furhter away than I thought (turns out the closest shell garage doesn't sell it) so it's going to have to be seriously magic to be worth the effort.
