You can get an Elite with 120gb for £179, would advise spend the extra £20 tbh. Probably a better deal out there though. Does it have to be brand new? If not, I am about to put one up for sale, plays all the discs you could want it to

What's wrong with the basic Arcade with 512mb memory card?

That combination has lasted me since 2005 until 3 months ago when I bought a 20Gb HDD from Microsoft for £13

The 120gb is very handy now you can save your most played games onto it, which also extends the life of the laser, and I have repaired a serious amount of consoles and have had only 2 elites with rrod
And black matches all my shit

You could of bought an Elite for £149 from littlewoods with a new user code last week(£30 off), or argos have an elite with resident evil 5 & black controller for £209, flog the extra game & controller for £25 each making the console £159

Buy a "broken" one from the links in the ebay thread, do the team executer and x-clamp fix, then get a hard disk from Ebay and bob's your auntie. no point buying a new one they all RROD or E74 eventually might aswell save money and start off with a broken one rather than forking out all that money for it to go 6 months down the line.

I'm sure you're aware that a laser costs £7 and takes 5 minutes to replace.

    Hardly a major worry.

HDD installs are cool though - but hardly essential.

I got an arcade here lying round was brand new at xmas, little man now has a premium (thanks to my elite upgrade) and tbh it's as good as new. If HMV do have the 120 HDD's for £30 as OMG posted yesterday, that's a cheap option, although littlewoods/additions direct are fairly cheap.

As for the HDD/Laser conflab there, the best thing for me is that the HDD installs are just so much quieter to play and well worth it. I had a flashed drive at 8x that wasn't too bad but now, they are all 12x and noisy as hell!

i just want a system that he can have a good play with and also something that will allow hiom to play online, to be honest i think i'll be playing on it aswell...........

My nephew got a reconditioned xbox, got it modified and he's having loads of issues with it, all the games that he plays he sems to have a big circle marked on the dvd.... and the xbox is very loud. to begin with it was ok but after a few weeks its a real ball ache!

i dont want any of that crap, would love to have a modified xbox but one that doesnt always say unable to read disk etc nearly all the time...

has my nephew got a poor modification? or are most xbox's that are modified hit and miss?

No mate modding wouldn't cause it, just sounds like a dodgy drive, you could stop it by putting little foam stoppers above where the disc sits to stop it lifting, I would just change the drive though

Sounds like he keeps tipping the xbox over whilst a game is playing...That or his disk drive isn't properly set back in the case properly.

after much searching online ive decided to get the amazon deal. thats a xbox 360 60gb console, extra wireless controller, indiana jones lego, kung fu panda, free hdmi wire for £170.

    http://www.best-xbox-deals.co.uk/

so can anyone tell me whether it would be wise for me to modify the xbox? the little un wants to play online, so is that going to cause problems, dont want him to ban the xbox or anything like that?

If you mod your 360 you will always run the risk of a ban ! It's your call dude !

We allrun the riskof a ban no matter how careful we think we are being using the latest firmware is still a risk.

However, even if it does get banned, just think of the 1000's of pounds you've saved by not buying games, you can get a replacement console for the cost of THREE games.
