Default A day at the beach...

For such a superb day, there could be no other place to drag the kids out to...

I thought I'd use this as a bit of an instructional thread (for those who are interested )

This first shot was taken with the 24-105, no flash, at f8, 1/320 to correctly expose. There is no sky in the shot so blowing it out was not an issue. You can see the sand and my daughter are slightly washed out (true to life).

This second shot was taken at 10mm with the 10-20 and shot at f22, 1/80 which was the correct exposure for the sky. I used an off camera flash slightly left to light my daughter as she would have been in shadow otherwise. You'll notice the sand and sky are much more vibrant in this shot, and that's the beauty of shooting with a narrow aperture (no filters used apart from UV). It naturally enhances the vibrancy of colours.

This last shot was taken for fun

Excellent thread Neo and a very good explanation of why these things happen. The blues in that sky are amazing and that's a nice capture on the falling sand there too

Damn dude, Kaila (spelling?) has grown so much since I saw her last and she certainly looks to be enjoying herself.
Nice idea in the last shot. Good use of the reflective surface in those sunnys

    Nice Tony, real nice.

I wonder though why the pink looks a flatter in the second photo, less vibrant than the first, as the yellows and blues are terrific.

Very nice work and thank you for the detailed explanation. I can never seem to work out the correct shutter speeds.

    Hi Neo

    Good advice for people there.

Have to say though the off camera flash in no.2 doesnt work for me, it's too bright in the bottom right imo. the skies and sand do look spot on though.

First one is a great capture, good expression and lucky timing. Second flash is a little harsh on her forehead I think but good technique. Third one has fabulous DOF and good exposure on the lens. Nice one!

Liking the 'natural'ness of the first one Tony, the flash on two gives a strange effect on the sand in the bottom left corner and on the bucket although the rest of the pic is spot on.

Have you lost someone on the last pic, can only see two people.....???

Also, which beach? You came to the coast, I headed inland!
