Husband jailed for rape of wife



A 29-year-old man has been jailed for five-and-a-half years at Londonderry Crown Court for raping and threatening to kill his then-wife. The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is originally from Poland but was living in the Derry area at the time of the attacks.
The offences took place between 2006 and January 2008.
In sentencing, the judge described the assaults as a "mean, bullying attack perpetrated by a drunken husband".
The judge also ruled that when the man is due for release, the normal conditions should not apply and he will be obliged to comply with any conditions deemed necessary.
The couple have since separated. The judge said that according to a pre-sentence report, the man posed a high risk of re-offending.
He said the man's former wife was still suffering emotionally from the multiplicity of offences the defendant committed against her.
