Default Dual Xeon 2.8 HT vs Athlon Dual Core 6000+

I've just picked up an old dell poweredge sc1420 currently packing a single xeon 2.8 with hyperthreading, it has room for another cpu...

my main pc is running an athlon dual core 6000+

is it worth me splashing out on another cpu for the dell? How would two xeon 2.8 +HT compare against a single athlon dual core 6000+ anyone have any ideas?

also, as some of you will no doubt know, my prefered os is XP, I know corp can handle 2 cpu's, but will it handle 2 cpu's with HT and report/use 4 cpus?

    cheers for any feedback

Not an exact answer to your question but i suppose it's relevant:

I've got a dell precision t7400 with a quad core xeon at 2.66GHz. I also got one for my little brother with 2 x quad core xeons at 2.00GHz. Mine has 4Gb of ram, his has 16Gb. In normal day to day use, I noticed nothing between them, although I probably would have if I started doing some video processing or something.

Xp pro happily picked up all 8 cores on my brothers pc without any fiddling.

Edit: If you reckon getting the other cpu will help with what you are doing, consider replacing your existing one as well if you can go faster, as it will probably be easier finding a matched pair rather than finding one exactly the same as you already have.

Just to add to Carls input.. it may be useful if your into using multi-threaded capable apps, or having more than a few apps running at the same time.

Also to clarify, there is a difference between multi core (Dual/Quad etc.) and multi processor. You might have a dual/quad, but it's still all on one processor.
