I'm learning how to make a site layout in PS. I'm close to finishing, but wanted some feedback on what I have done. Bare in mind it is my first ever design

    It's very 1990's...

I'm hoping you're just using PS as a design guide and you're not building the whole site as a single JPG? That also went out somewhere in the 90's.

I'd love to give you constructive feedback but all I can really say is start again. Sorry dude...

I'm designing it in PS then slicing it up and using CSS to format it.

That's what I was afraid of... You get all sorts of cross browser alignment issues doing that, dont.
Your layout is ok as a starting point, but teach yourself HTML and CSS (presuming you're not yet versed) and build your site from scratch using ps only for the non dynamic interface sections and pictures...
Once you have the initial build complete, you can refine as you go.

The guy is talented and a very good teacher, he does exactly the thing your doing - each 'show' is around 30 mins so not too shabby for nowt

    That site looks good.

In terms of the actual design, what do people recommend should be changed? I kinda like the dark theme so preferably wanna stick with that. I do have a some colours that I would wanna use, but I want to make sure that they all go together. I hate the nav bar though. I couldn't get make one that looked decent enough.

well, the colours are a little drab, i find my eye is aching a bit . as a rule white text on black is harder to read then black text on white.

The main content box and the footer also seen to be blurred rather than having a definate outline to define the 'edges'. Kind of annoys me.

To be honest, there is not enough there to say 'design'. I would rethink your colour scheme, browse the web for site designs you like - screen grab em, import into photoshop as an image and 'express' your self

You might want to look at http://kuler.adobe.com/ for good colour swatches.
