Default Help a noob with Sat setup..

Ok so i really want to annoy the wife for a bit and get some new sat kit..

If i`m honest i haven't got a clue where to start..

My initial goals are to receive a German channel ARD 1 and eventually end up with motorised HD set-up i`m mainly interested in sports (motor sport) and films..

Allso can someone explain what the CAMs are and what my options are with them..

    Thanks guys ....

Lets start off slow, to get started you can have a very simple dish (fixed, not motorised) on the majority of satelites from a minidish (skydish) with no trouble at all. A simple receiver is the next bit, but all you need is a lil ole dish in the correct position then you can scan through hundreds of channels, then if you so wish you could upgrade the receiver to an HD ready box but to be honest there is sod all out there in HD that doesnt require a subscription.

    Hope this helps.

A conditional access module (CAM) is an electronic device, usually incorporating a slot for a viewing card.

TBH m8 the sat scene is on its arse at the mo as far as free channels are concerned.

Try and get a second hand dish and box and point at 19E or 13E and check out the free channels on there first. With one dish you can get a dual LNB so you can access the 2 sats without moving the dish.

I personally wouldn't purchase anything from Alsat, and I'm sure I'm not alone.

Card sharing is where each person attached to the server shares their subscription, be it Sky, Premiere, Canal etc. A lot of people would love Sky HD in their card share but the card would need to be in a set top box that allows you to share it back, i.e. not a sky box.

You need to do a lot of reading to get up to speed, if you are happy with your sky sub then fair enough but once you've had a taste of what's out there and have the appropriate set up (a motorised dish) then you'll soon want more.

    edit:
Yes Nagra 3 is an encryption.
