    Default London restaurant recommendations

    Hi all,

I'm off to London in the summer to watch Wacko Jacko, and having a short city break while we're there. We're looking for where to go for a excellent evening meal.

We went to The Ivy last year, as well as Gordon Ramsays Boxwood Cafe, so we're looking for the top places. We quite fancy a good quality pre-theatre meal one night too.

    Any suggestions folks?

    Cheers
    Russbeer

Personally, I love Cantina Del Ponte. Over looks the thames with outside seating, views of Tower Bridge, Canary Wharf etc.

Great food, very good service and a really good outside atmosphere in the summer. Used to pop down there in the summer on a thursday or friday evening every week last year, with friends or my ex.

Tis a bit out the way though - and not sure what it would be like on a Saturday or Sunday, as obviously the normal city folk won't be flocking there. Book though if you do want to go there, as they never have tables if you turn up out of the blue.

Will look at Cantina Del Ponte, cheers!

Fifteen has cropped up once or twice, but I've been told its in a very dodgy neighbourhood and don't fancy that...

Food at the Ivy was ok, I had crispy duck which was more like pork crackling than the chinese version of crispy duck... the best thing about the Ivy was that we had John Cleese at the table next to us!

Somewhere that's really good value is Terra, mediterranean restaurant. Been there a few times and the food is always great. Meal for 2 with wine for under £50.

no innuendo there at all is there!!

That Cantina one is too far from where we are staying at night, but may look into having lunch there. I'll check out that one of yours too Cassy thanks.

Any more for any more? Roach posted some expensive hotels he used last year, I'm guessing he uses posh restaurants too!

If you like Indian food you must go to Atul Kochar's restaurant, Benares (Michelin star curry!). Best reataurant I have ever been to (and I've been to 3 Ramasay restaurants now and none compare!). Its simply stunning! Last time we were down we went to Miaze (Mark Sargeant's Ramasay place) and the grill next door (same restaurant) looked excellent if you're a steak man!

15 is fine mate. The area isn't that bad, just get a sherbert to and from the station.

    Is a fantastic place.

Get on toptable and look at the places with heavy discounts. Get to try a really nice place without breaking the bank.

If you want good Japanese cuisine try Zuma or for Chinese Hakkasan....Alan Yau's flagship restaurant (we've tried Sake No Hana and it's nowhere near as good) or Pan Asian a favorite of mine is Cocoon, make sure you ask for a window table, which is ideal for two and over looks Regent St.

For great steaks, I love Gaucho Grill. The Picadilly one often has live music on the top floor too.

For British cuisine try Simpsons, we've only been once but it was excellent. Good service and great food.

For French, the Picasso room at L'Escargot is perfect for a date with the missus.

If you both like fish try J Sheekey as it's hailed as one of the best fish restaurants in London.

If you want any other recommendations let me know.

Rhodes 24 is nice in Tower 42. I also have to agree with the OXO tower, great views of the City and Thames and good food.

For a cheap meal, Fire and Stone in Covent Garden do some good deals on their excellent pizza's. Monday to Thursday they do 2 Pizzas for a tenner!

+1 for Rhodes 24, and also Benares on Berkley Square.

Best i've been to so far would be Claridges though. Food was great, but theres something about the resturaunt that you can't beat, proper posh in there and service is unbelievable.

Keep meaning to take a trip down and try out some others, the OXO tower may be my next one

For a good pre-theatre I'd recommend Incognico on Shaftsbury avenue. Reasonablish, although with 3 courses and wine I've paid anywhere between 60 to 150 a head.

One Roach recommended to me a while back was Rousillion - a very nice place near Pimlico.

Failing that, if you want somewhere special try Kai of Mayfair. Simply superb food and wine.

I've been to those and can recommend them. The Ivy is OK if all you want to do is star spot, it's not as good as it used to be.
If you can get hold of a copy of Time Out Eating it really is spot on for loads of recommendations:

Avenue looks good and is a spit away from where we are staying at the Cavendish in Mayfair, and Kai's looks nice too.

Will have a look at the others later. Thanks all, and Roach, you can recommend me more if ya like

Patterson's (Mayfair) is a nice place too but IIRC was quite pricey. Along with aforementioned The Avenue probably some of the best places I've eaten ever!
