Help Bought a macbook, can't install the OSX10.5 disks

    Hi all,

I just took the plunge (well I need one for an iPhone project i'm gonna be working on) and got myself a macbook.

I picked it up off a guy who was seeling it on eBay, details are

    Macbook 2,1
    Intel COre 2 Duo 2.1GHz
1GB (will be upgrading ASAP) RAM

THe problem I have is that it came preinstalled with 10.4.11

    And 2 rescue disks.

However, the rescue disks seem to be for OSX 10.5, when I try to install it says it will not install on this computer (assume they are tied to specific models or something?). So i'm stuck. I've no 10.4.11 disks to do a full restore, and I can't install 10.5 using the restore DVD's that I have.

Short of heading to PCWOrld tomorrow to get a retail copy of leopard, is there any way I can force my 10.5 restore DVD's to work on the machine?

    Thanks in advance

My macbook does this quite a bit when its time for a os upgrade and its fucking annoying

What you want to do is..

Applications -> Utilities -> Disk utility

Select your HD on the left hand side then -

Run Verifiy Disk and then Repair Disk

You should then able to run your resucue disks..failing that download leopard off newzbin ( I use sabnzb ) and burn to disk and install (no crack needed)

    Hope that helps!

Find a student and take them with you to an Apple Store..you'll get 10-15% off retail

Maybe its the Power PC version of the OS on the discs?? I can't think of another reason you'd get that message. Leopard install for you young man!!

They may also be the wrong recovery disks, you cannot use the iMac disks to recover a mac book for example. As said just download the disk from newsgroups as the Leopard disk is universal and not tied to a model like the recovery disks are.

Also, for leopard, there are no separate power pc and intel versions. There is the retail, which will install on anything and separate recovery disks for MacBook, iMac and powermacs. Just grab the retail from ngs.

I had a feeling that was the case. Since it's for an iPhone project bear in mind that 10.5.6 knackers the USB DFU mode option unless you use a USB hub.

And having said all the above Tiger is still a sweet OS so maybe just use that?

I seem to have stumbled again, how do I burn the DMG image on my PC? I googled around and found I can covert it to an iso from the disk utility (well .cdr = .iso), however from what i've read this will burn fine but the disk won't be bootable?

I seem to remember others having this problem, there is software for the PC to burn Mac discs but I've never managed to get it to work properly so you'll need to find a Mac to burn it or borrow some install discs in th first instance.

    Good news!

I managed to use disk manager to write the OSX .dmg file to my USB flash drive, booted off that and now installing leopard.

    Thanks everyone
