Default Just bought myself a Macbook

well I've gone and done it. Got myself a macbook off ebay.

Reckon i've got a good deal, £346 for 2.5gig ram, 2ghz processor 80 gig hard disk Mac OS 10.4, Tiger along with Photoshop CS3.

I'm assuming this will only have the dvd rom cdr but i hardly burn dvd's any more.

I'm mainly wanting it for photoshop and photo processing.

how easy is it to change the superdrive and hard disk if i wanted to do this. Is it worthwhile upgrading the OS at all to leopard?

What else can i do on my Mac and what can it do for me?

I'm really excited about getting to use this little fella.

    Thanks

    lol good good..

The intel chipset allows you to install windows as a separate os (Bootcamp) or by using virtualisation(Parallels/Vmware)

I use sabnzb+ to download stuff of newgroups

kisMAC Trunk is a nice little network sniffing app

If you want some fun you can always install IalertU (Youtube it)

Also the upgrade to Leopard is deff worth it(Download it + install...No cracks needed)

Just remember..if you delete something on a Mac it can't be recovered!

I don't really use anti-virus or any spyware programs..don't need it

The hard disk, along with the ram is a pile of piss to swap..there are instructions everywhere..the superdrive though I have no idea :/..

Good luck and enjoy! Remember the Macbook ain't no iphone..It still be worth a shitload come 18 months

    cheers sanj,

I stuck Vmware on a mates mac a while back, couldn't really see why he wanted windows on a
Mac, told him he should have just bought a pc laptop. lol.

I've got win7 on this netbook so not too fussed about Gates' gear.

I use sbanzbd so will dl new os and some of that other stuff.

    Thanks again

You can recover files once they have been deleted...

Once you have installed Leopard put Time machine on it, it tracks all files that enter and leave the system and makes a checkpoint so you can go back to then and drag it back.

It is a great bit of software and really good if your system fecks up as you can just restore the lot from a Time Machine backup....

I have a 750gb WD mybook connected via usb...! Plug it in launch Time Machine and it asks you what to use. Point it at the disk and away you go...

I can go back 6 months to pretty much any point in time and the drive still has space on it. I just exclude my download directory and my iTunes (Which is on another external drive...) as i can always get them back easily enough.

Yep, Time Machine is the tits, you can go back and restore the whole drive or browse for individual files. I restore on manual though rather than have it do it every hour.

If i were to plug one into my iMac, is there a way to wireless back up my macbook to or would that have to be plug in job.....although thinking out loud i copy all my files across to my iMac every day manually so maybe this will not be a problem.....

There is a way of doing the wireless backup without Time Capsule (the apple hardware) I did it for a while to my Qnap. I haven't got the info here but google it or try sites like hackint0sh, it involves a little terminal work but i copy and pasted that. You only have to do the terminal thing once and then Time Machine should see the wireless drive as an available volume.

If I put leopard on, is it just a case of a clean install? ie stick in the DVD and follow the instructions?

Yes mate, get the disk of the newsgroups but you will need to have a dual layer dvd to burn it to.

Even better if you can get hold of the restore disks for a macbook as that will work well as well... There should be no drivers required and it should just work fine in both cases.

Try one of these, the 10 5 6 should be a newer release but the 10 5 ISO looks like the proper retails disk from what i can make out.

    Enjoy.
