Question Surge Protector's, who uses them?

I'm thinking about buying a few surge protectors due to the ongoing power issues i'm having at home but not sure they'll make much a difference. They seem quite expensive however i've found a 6 way adapter for £7.95 which seems quite reasonable.

    http://www.dabs.com/products/belkin-...ge%20protector

Does anyone else use them and is there any reason why I should go for a more expensive one? Also would you plug in devices such as Fridge Freezers, washing machines etc into one adapter as they always recommend that you plug directly into the mains?

I use this, cost about £45 6 months ago,I paid a bit more to cover myself, not sure if it was money well spent though !! it blew up last week when I tried to switch it off by the units power switch, new one arrived 2 days later from belkin, comes with a £175,000 warranty for connected equiptment which I am going through now for a PC !! (well mobo and power supply up to now, waiting for bits)

Ouch - do you suspect the extension lead is what caused the failure, or are you thanking your lucky stars it happened with a protected/insured one?

I'd be interested to see who the warranty works and if you get the cash back for new parts. If you can update this thread either way that would be cool

Yup, without a doubt, the switch on the side or the unit didn't click into place it sort of floated when switched, then it sparked and blew, the switch then wouldn't click in either direction... Fooked

Definitely worth it mate as they are reletively cheap now. Ebuyer have some cheap Belkin ones:

Thanks for the info. Reason I ask is that every now and then I have to buy extension leads for work and claim on expenses. I've always bought cheap and cheerful for a few reasons:

Don't wanna lend my company any more money than I have to.

    They could always get nicked/swapped.

I've always been highly sceptical. In all the people I've spoken to and forums I've been on, I've only read about one case of a surge damaging computer equipment - an irish fella on a car forums I used to go on had his telephone line hit by lighting and what was connected to that was proper toast.

That kind of thing that will kill pc's, but is highly unprobable for those of us whose services come under ground. My work has a couple of remote sites with very dirty power from local generators and I've never heard of a pc killed due to dodgy power. I have seen a few that had their file/operating systems damaged though and needed rebuilds.

I had a psu blow once when the mrs plugged in an old 1kw hoover and turned it on. The power surge killed it when she turned it off again.

Took out the graphics card and motherboard at the same time.

Do you claim for it? I've been reading up on this and if your power goes off 4 times a year or more for longer than 3 hours at a time you are entitled to £50 as part of the Guaranteed Standards. You just need to keep a note of dates and times and report it each time it happens. This is with United Utilities however i'm sure its the same for all utilities.

I have the server and PC connected to a UPS with surge protection. I think I have one behind the TV for the hifi, tv and other bits my bedroom has one that everything else is connected to.

I have a few customers who I was constantly replaceing PSU's and motherboards for due to power problems we fitted surge protectors in there and now the only problem is that the users are thick as pig shit.

Use one on the computer as I plug the hoover into the same 4-way.

A surge protectors offer no protection from lightning strikes.
