Database or Software delivery system

Im spot on with websites (design wise) but im not sure on how to go about the following:

Ive started a new website and i have a software product which is unique to me, whats the best and easiest way to say control downloads so that when a customer pays the price it emails them a serial number and then directs them to the download.

is third party sites any good or is it just throwing brass away.

before now ive simply set up accounts manually which has been fine but no good if you go on holiday for a week or 2

any advice mucho appreciated.

I dont know about any 3rd party solutions, not ever had to do anything like this, but if you were to use paypal or worldpay (as examples) as a payment mechanism it would be pretty easy. Both those services will send information to your backend database system instantly (look up paypals instant payment notification). I use this to do all sorts of things, such as stock control, invoices, order status updates etc. You can catch all sorts of events - cancelled, refunds etc, so you can retain complete control and only send out the serial number upon certain conditions being met by the payment notification. Seriously, if you know any php (or java, .net etc) you would be able to do this in a day. I can tell you what settings you need to put into paypal, and I can give you some example scripts that control what comes in from paypal and communicates with the db / emails etc.

for me its ease of use and reliability.

ive had a look at a company called share-it and that looks ideal, their % is low and also provide an electron card to transfer your money to.

ive got several products planned so this might be ideal for me to do.
