Wii Booting Games From Hard Drive

    Hey Guys
have any of you, or DO any of you use an external usb HD to boot your games from??

and if so, do you have to get an external caddy that plugs into the leccy, or will one powered from the usb itself work just as well.

Ive searched google but there's no mention of what type of caddy to use, i have a laptop hard drive i want to buy a caddy for, but all the ones ive seen don't plug into the leccy just the USB itself.

    any thoughts really appreciated guys

    cheers

any should work, ive got a standard 3.5" hdd style one which has its own PSU. The ones that use laptop 2.5" are usually usb powered, although I've noticed that they usually have 1 usb cable for data and 1 for power, this should work with the wii as it does have 2 usb sockets but I havn't tried it.

Its really good using a hdd with the wii, saves loads of time burning stuff although you may need to fiddle about in the options to get stuff to work sometimes.

what you want is any type of 2.5" Enclosure that comes with a pig tail type lead i.e. a 2 into 1 USB. I have tried various types now on different consoles and these ones seem to be the best ones I have been getting a sumvision one from scan or microdirect they seem to alsways work.

Cheap as chips Novatech SATA caddy with a 2.5" drive from an old laptop in mine, single lead bus powered and never had an issue.

Yep thats what I use, if you are partitioning a drive make sure its the primary one you format for the wii.

At the wii end you have a few options too, Coverflow loader 5.0 http://code.google.com/p/wiicoverflow/ or usbloader GX http://usbloadergx.koureio.net/.

Out of interest...do you have to plug both the USB connections from the HDD into the back of the WII? I've been using just one, and have noticed that the HDD does sometimes like to freeze.

ps...I'd defo go for one that is USB powered, saves messing about with plug sockets and stuff.

I used to get this with random games...what cios version are you using? and are you rebooting in between games? Also, some games do not require the 002 fix, so its a case of trial and error. I'm using the latest coverfloader and it works fine after a bit of tweaking.

I had one of the older 2.5" WD Passport drives and it needed extra power to spin the driver faster else the cut scenes all stuttered. I just modded a friends Wii and he has a nice 500GB 2.5" Passport which does not need extra power and that works a treat.

I'm only mentioning all this in case someone gets stuttering probs and wonders WTF.

Freaky, try here for a solution, good tut's and good info all round

    cheers m8
turned out to be the hard drive, the one i was using i had formatted for the ps3, then it wouldnt format in windows, but then again the exact same thing happened with the second hard drive im using now and that one works fine.

so it just didnt like the first hard drive, im using a 160gig seagate now and workin great
only thing that still wont work is downloading the covers in coverfloader, but that aint a big deal, just be nice to get em in lol

    so cheers everyone

@fanni: i was using both usb ports m8, the lead was a double one
