Dozens hurt in Big Dipper crash


The rollercoaster opened in 1923

More than 30 people have been injured in a crash involving two rollercoaster cars at Blackpool Pleasure Beach.
Two cars on the famous Big Dipper crashed and came to rest 20ft (6m) off the ground at about 1945 BST.
Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said about 32 "walking wounded" were taken to hospital by ambulance.
A specialist rope team was brought in to help get people off the ride, with stretchers and spinal boards used for the injured.
A number of passengers on the ride suffered whiplash, broken bones and back injuries.
The Big Dipper, a wooden rollercoaster, opened in 1923.

Is this not the smaller one and not the Huge modern one that you see on the pics ?

I was up there last week and can't see if it was the big one that people would have escaped with just Whiplash.



The big one in the background is a seperate entity or not ?

Yes they are talking about the old wooden frame one where you get on in the big round blue canopy.

I prefer the old wood ones at blackpool,hope they dont overreact and shut them down..

saw this on the news this morning, i will be gutted if they take the ride away i love the wooden rollercoasters and we aint got many of them in this country

I think they'll shut it down for good now. To be fair it is only good for nostalgia, as a ride it is a piece of shit compared to today's rides.

I'm sure the large one is called the Pepsi Max Big One (you can see it towering over the Dipper in the video below).
The Big Dipper is ancient and should really be pulled down and re-safety-analysed now.

they may not shut down perminently but it'll go through months of
security checks before it re-opens. But the main problem is the general
public's confidence in the ride again.
