    Default Removing date stamp

Got back from holiday yesterday and going through the pics on our cameras.
The kids have a Kodak point and click from a few years ago, and as the batteries has been out for ages it had forgotten the date and reverted to default settings which includes date stamping which is very annoying.

I know I can photoshop the date out easily enough but I noticed something strange when looking at them on my computer.

If I open the file in Windows Photo Viewer or Photoshop or whatever it shows the date stamp, but if I browse the folder and have the thumbnail view on the date stamps aren't there.
Why is this, and can I easily disable the date stamp view on pictured that were taken with the date stamp on?
    Cheers.
Ooh, ooh, ooh, the funky gibbon.
