I think you can only do it with one of those VAG cables. Any back street mechanic should be able to sort cheap enough. I have one of them cables I used to use on my 97 Audi A3 but the software always did my head in. Best to see a pro.

Is it a MK1 (8L) or a MKII (8P) Chassis?
You might get away with changing the country code using VCDS, else it will be an adaptation channel.

8L - http://wiki.ross-tech.com/index.php/...Cluster#Coding
Stu.... :-)
Hi it’s an 8P chassis
I am just getting my head around the Ross-Tec software so I will have a little play with it
Thanks
Phil
Easy that Phil.
Gimme a shout if your stuck, I moderate a couple of VCDS forums.
Stu.... :-)
Thanks
It now getting a bit more interesting
We (I ) am doing up a cat d insurance write off for my son. It was written off after an internal fire (we have now nearly replaced all of the trim)
The car was advertised by the salvage dealer with 68000 miles on the clock but when cleaned to smoke damage off the glass we found was 68000 Km.
The speedo is in Km. So I want to change the dial to Mph and the odometer to shown miles
I don’t want to change the complete instrument panel as I want keep all the imbedded info correct an genuine
I have been playing round with the Ross-Tec software I am able to get into engine codes build details ect but cannot read the instruments or other modules for some reason
Regards
Phil
Can you do an autoscan and post it up for me? Silly question, you do have the ignition on?
You can also get the mileage from the ECU on many TDi's - It does depend on the ECU fitted.
Stu.... :-)
Hi Stu
Yes I did have the ignition on It finds the engine controller but non of the others may be the interface I am using it’s a cheap one of eBay
I go hold of a 07 clock set today in MPH, It shows the mileage of the car it came off, which slightly lower then ours, but it would have to be reprogrammed to keys as immobilizer is built into the unit
The car is petrol by the way not diesel don’t know if that make much difference
I can do auto scan and send it next week (we are away for a few days)
Thanks Phil

To change a dash insert you'll need the Immo codes (known as SKC's) as the Immo is built into the dash insert. These aren't given out by dealers anymore as they don't see them, they plug in via VAS (Diagnostics) and get them online from Germany.
They can be retrieved using VAG CAN Commander on many of the inserts although I'm not sure if it'd do a 2007 model. VAG-CAN Commander can correct the mileage for you too.
That brings me onto your next problem, I'm guessing that as you say you bought the VAG-COM/VCDS cable from eBay it's not a CAN capable cable. For the A3 you must use CAN for diagnostics and this requires a genuine Ross-Tech Cable (although like everything they can be found in China)
Stu.... :-)
Hi Stu
I am using
409.1 KKL USB VAG-COM OBD2 OBD II Diagnostic
from Ebay running version 409.1 and a little timing routine
If I got Vag Can Commander 1.4 and vag K Can lead it would probably read SKC’s on 2004 dash but not the 2007 dash,
Looks like I have a problem
Could just mark the dash at 30 40 50 60 & 70 Mph I suppose
Phil
to get the skc / imob code
u can always read the ecu dump via a eeprom programer and then normally the pin no is in plain text infront of u
or u could upload the dump and some 1 can find it 4 u
The lead is your problem then mate. It needs to be one of the newer HEX & CAN or Micro CAN ones for the 8P A3.
If you don't want to lash out on the tools then you could try a main dealer, should be 30 mins to an hour labour for the cluster swap, they have no facility to sort the miles out though. I also have a mate up your way with genuine VAG-CAN Commander, I can put you in touch with him if you like.
Stu.... :-)
You will need the right equipment to do it as it is all done by codes been programmed in.Im not sure of what equipment will do it as i use launch x431 to do these jobs and what i do is connect the x431 then enter the instrument section and then recode it.If you have the right tool and can communicate with the instrument cluster then i can give you the correct codes for the u.k...
Thanks Stu and Paul
I will have a play with Vag Can Commander with a different interface next week and see how it goes.
The cars a few weeks off going back on the road, I will keep you posted on progress
Stu if I have no luck perhaps I can contact your mate in a week or two
Thanks again
Phil
Well that was a long two weeks, but the car is now on the road
The replacement speedo was no good because dial calibration was all wrong and it had the later graphics which were also incompatible
So I have now ordered a KPH to MPH conversion dial from Lockwood
Changing the milometer turned out easy with Vag Com
Regards,
Phil
VAG-COM(VCDS) cannot do mileage, did you mean you used VAG Commander?
Stu.... :-)
Hi Stu
No Vag Com,
Just set it to UK and that changed it from 68000 Kilometers to 42000 miles
Phil
Here is a pic
Ahh right I got you, I thought you'd 'changed' the mileage but you've only changed displayed value.
There was a set of S3 clocks on eBay that were cheap if you still fancied a change.
Stu.... :-)
Ah that’s was one of the problems the scale is all wrong, 70mph on my clocks will be just past 12. o clock
