Thanks for all this research unclex it is much appreciated! I started shaking a bit with excitement (sad I know) when I read these posts. Give me a while to digest this info and buy some hardware and I'll start playing..

The potential for this is absoloutly insane. What kind of range do you get with an external antenna do you get and what kinds of antenna's have you tried.

Cool,I ended up having a marathon internet session last night and learnt a lot about this stuff. But I have a couple of questions about things I'm not clear on. Bear with me on this if these questions are a bit dumb!

    1. Which card to get?

Im gonna get a wireless network card but im not too sure on which one to get. First of all it has to be for a standard pc as Im far too poor to get a laptop or a hand held so driving around is not an option. Second of all it has to be able to either have a socket to add an external antenna or be reasonably easy to hard wire an antenna in. Also Netstumbler compatability is a must

    2. Antennas

I've come across a lot of different instructions to construct your own antenna. These vary a great deal so I would like some guidelines about which suit my purposes. First I want to get an omnidirectional antenna to scope out the surrounding area. I understand that the distance these antennas is quite limited but am still interested in getting one going to see whats going on locally. Second I quite like the idea of a more focussed antenna, these seem to givea greatly increased rance but it is neccesary to aim the antanna directly at the target node. Seen some 'pringles tins' ones and then some made out of modded satelite dishes. From my back window I have a near perfect unobstructed view of about 60% of the town I live in. So Im sure that I can have a good nose about by mounting a can on my windowsill and inching it around!

    3. Link up

If anyone lives in the south east I'd be well interested in seeing if we can create our own wan. Seems that distance is a problem but read something last night that mentioned distances of up to 14.5 km can be achieved allbeit at a sacrifice of bandwidth. Also Im sure that a kind of intermediary node can be set up if we can find a location suitable to house a linux box with a cpl of cards and suitable antennas. Just a thought.

    4. Does the transmission strengh of the target node have to be as high as the one I am using? So, say we are 1km apart, and I have a range of 1km but the target node only has a range of a few hundred metres. Will I be able to communicate with the target? This might be the most stupid question asked so far.

    5. Can anyone provide any whitepapers etc on wireless networking protocols? 802.11b etc

Got a mercedes campervan about to have the back and side windows mirrored! Gonna get all james bond at some point!

    Cheers

    Which card to get

    (pinched this off ackers.org)

    Wireless Cards

First of all, you want to decide what you want to do with your little wireless gadgets. There are many cards and what you want to do will narrow down your choices of cards.

For example, if you wanted to crack WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy), you'd need a Prism II chipset card (for use with AirSnort). AirSnort currently only supports Prism II chipset cards (as opposed to Hermes). Here are a list of cards to look into if you're interested in cracking WEP encrypted WLANs: (Note: AirSnort is currently only for Linux)

    Addtron AWP-100
    Bromax Freeport
    Compaq WL100
    D-Link DWL-650
    GemTek (Taiwan) WL-211
    Linksys WPC11
    Samsung SWL2000-N
    SMC 2632W
    Z-Com XI300
    Zoom Telephonics ZoomAir 4100
    LeArtery Solutions SyncbyAir LN101

On the other hand, if you want to sniff for for WLANs, access points and "war driving" in a sense, with the use of maybe NetStumbler... then you should look into Hermes chipset cards. NetStumbler only currently supports these and not Prism II cards. Also, NetStumbler is only for Windows (but an alternative is ethereal which is like tcpdump but for both Windows and Linux). Here are a list of cards to look into if you want to "war drive" etc. for use with NetStumbler:

    Lucent Technologies WaveLAN/IEEE (Orinoco)
Dell TrueMobile 1150 Series (PCMCIA and mini-PCI)
    Avaya Wireless PC Card
Toshiba Wireless LAN Card (PCMCIA and built-in)
    Compaq WL110
    Cabletron/Enterasys Roamabout
    Elsa Airlancer MC-11
    ARtem ComCard 11Mbps
    IBM High Rate Wireless LAN
    Buffalo Airstation (Melco) WLI-PCM-L11
    1stWave 1ST-PC-DSS11IS, DSS11IG, DSS11ES, DSS11EG

Some cards allow external antennas to be connected, some do not (meaning voiding your warranty with some DIY electronics). Read some reviews BEFORE buying, from both commercial sites, magazines and personal reviews. Wireless cards are by far cheap. So make sure you get the right card for what you want to do.

Orinoco (Lucent) are cards that are thought very highly of by "stumblers" around the globe. Also, you can easily add an external antenna to this card. The same for the Compaq WL110 (relabeled Lucent card basically). As stated, you can carry out do-it-yourself electronics on some cards, such as the D-Link DWL-650. This card does not easily support adding an external antenna, but with some hard work (and voiding your warranty) you can make it connect to one. Word of warning: Don't start opening up your brand new card if you are thinking of sending it back in the future.

Next thing you need to figure out is if you want to buy it in a shop or online, have a look around, compare prices. It can be easy to get ripped off when dealing with computer equipment. Check jungle.co.uk, amazon.co.uk electronics and maybe even grab a bargain off of ebay.co.uk!
