Default Top tip for NY lodgings

Forget trying to find a decent hotel in Manhattan or nearby since the prices will always be extortionate. Instead pick a hotel in Long Island, just across the water. The prices are on average a half to a third the prices in Manhattan and yet you're only 5-10 mins from Times Square on the subway (Queensboro Plaza). I'm staying at the 3 star Comfort Inn Long Island and paying just £170 for 3 nts... Bargin

Better still, if you stay at the YMCA in Hoboken, New Jersey it'll only cost you a couple of blowjobs and most of your dignity but at least you'll be able to afford that Helicopter tour of the Hudson.

They have a Beetle Drive on a Tuesday night too, awesome!

Call me a fussy monster, but I like to have my own bathroom and I definitely don't want to be sharing a dorm with 5 unwashed, sweaty males who've just arrived from Cambodia.

I stayed in what was pretty much a hostel in December 2 stops from Times Square for £110 for 6 days. Had to move room 4 times at first but it was fine after that! Bit of a crummy area but werent that bad plus your only there to sleep. My mate stayed in the pod hotel and literally paid 4 times what we did - wasnt even all that. Reminded me of an easyhotel...

According to TripAdvisor and the internal rating systems on most booking sites (e.g. Hotels.com, Booking.net, Yahoo etc...) its very decent (7/10) with clean rooms, courteous staff and complimentary brekkie. Its also in a fairly safe, well lit neighbourhood and only 1 block (3 min walk) from the subway station.

The only thing about Long Island is that its fairly industrial, but as long as I can jump on a train and be in NYC in 5 mins I don't particularly care.

I'm flying to JFK next month for a 3 day offsite in New Jersey, after thats over I plan to spend 3 nts in New York on my own dollar. I'll post a review and perhaps a few piccies once I return, can't wait to cover all those spots I missed back in May.
