Help MiFi devices.. any decent deals about (sim free or three)

I really want a MiFi unit. I currently use a symbian mobile phone coupled with walkinghotspot to do this exact thing but I think the mifi unit would be ideal for me.

You can get them from three for £99 with 3GB/3 months (whichever comes first) worth of internet but has anyone seen any without sim or cheaper ? I already have a three mobile broadband contract.

    thanks,

    malty

maltloaf: Call 3 up and say you want a MiFi but don't want to pay the price or you'll cancel. You'll get put through to cancellation's department and they will do you a deal

i'm no good at stuff like that besides my contract is half price existing customer thingy and I don't think they would feel that gutted if I did cancel, with me only paying £4.82 (or something) a month !

I'd rather buy the unit if I can.

I just went on the online chat thingy and asked about it and according to them, officially the device is £99 and the bundled data allowance is free, so there's no benifit in buying the unit with no allowance. The advisor said that the unit would work with my existing contract sim no problem, so I'm still looking for one.

there's a couple but theyre not as nice to use as the symbian alternatives (or at least they werent last time I tried)

PDAnet is one and also os3.x has built in tethering via cable or bluetooth.

The bit that makes pdanet unfriendly is that you have to create a wifi hotspot on the pc and then connect the iphone to it.

The symbian programs create a proper hotspot that you connect to like you would any other, I use a n81 8GB with walkinghotspot to do this, but would much rather a stand alone unit like these mifi devices.

You could get a draytek vigor 2800vg On ebay for £26 with 3 days left.

Once you've updated the firmware, many usb 3g sticks can be fitted, and it's a router with wifi with a lot more functionality than MiFi (but not quite as small).

The 2820 can do the same thing but I'm guessing 2800's will be cheapest

It's the size that's the selling factor for me. I might as well go for the retail one...

i just had another thought about the unit you mentioned too. Presumably they need a power adaptor. I need it to be fully portable

Yep, true - it's just a normal router that can take a usb stick. I'm sure I've seen a usb lead that would fit one but I don't think your laptop would last long!

Just today there's a tethering manager called MyWi been released. It seems a bit buggy but gives 'proper' wifi hotspot. It's on cydia and i'll have a play tonight.

    cheers,
