Virgin Media 50mb in next week or so

Can you guys that have had the 50mb installed let me know what kit I should get with the install, as normally I beleive VM use Netgear routers, but I have read it may be a D-Link one. Also what do people think of the 50mb connection, as currently i'm on 20mb but have managed to get it upgraded for a extra £7 per month.

Will post back findings once it is installed. As are a few other forums I'm hearing mixed reactions.

You get the new vm modem a netgear wnr2000 router and a wireless usb dongle, the guy was at mine about 10 mins and i have been at full speed since it was fitted.

Great thanks for the info, cant wait to get it installed .. I mean a xvid movie on 20mb normally takes what 4 mins ... for a 700mb file, so on 50mb it should take what a click lol ... no seriously under 2 mins for a xvid movie .. unreal ... Hopefully the rest of the equipment will talk ok to the router, i.e. iMac, PS3, Wii and HP tablet PC ... as did read a few issues with some kit with the new router.

yeah xvid about 2 mins a dvd 10 to 12 mins and it takes longer to burn a 360 game than it actually takes to download it

Love it, how long does it take to download a 360 game, as on 20mb its about 54 mins. And to burn at x8 its about 14 mins ....

I had the 50mb just under a week and had it canceled as my connection went shite. I was on 20mb but put on the same servers as the 50mb and I got 34mb and 1.5mb upload, not sure why nor did the vm guy who installed the 20mb, only on the 20mb for a week and then had the 50mb installed got 50mb when installed and then got 15mb about 5:30pm as someone on my street on a 10 mb connection was downloading, now the 50mb is supposed to be on its own server but I was getting very high pings and 15mb from it. ok so you might be thinking that some downloading wouldn't/shouldn't affect me but it did, the person downloading is my cousin boyfriend and he downloads as soon as he gets in from work, I went round to his see what he was downloading he was downloading all the only fools and horse's and all the most haunted on dvd and some other shit a total of over 100gig I told him to stop downloading and turn his pc off while I did some speedtest and I got 64mb and almost 1.7mb upload I ran the test for about 45 mins one after another I then told my cousin it was ok to do his downloading and as soon as he did 15mb download is all I got .

I phoned vm and then said it was a problem on the amp, bullshit. I then explained the above and they told me there are monitoring the downloader as he as been at it for months, who hasn't though, fair enough he pays so why shouldn’t he but when I pay £44per month for 50mb and only get 15mb it was a piss take, the main reason for my connection is for online 360 gaming but when you get in a game of cod4 take host and then get connection interruption as your host I though fuck it I gave it 5 days as when I phoned vm they said it would be 3 days and it would be sorted but it wasn't so I cancelled it. For my trouble vm let me get away with the activation charge of £20 for only having it less than a week let me keep the wireless n router and dongle. but even now I’m back to my 20mb connection I wish I never gone to 50mb cause all I get is 20mb where as I was getting 34mb and 1.5mb upload.

one other thing if you want to check if your connection is stable for 50mb users here is waht to do

open "command prompt" (depending on what OS you have i have xp so thats what i get)
type "tracert www.v*****m****.co.uk "(you know what the ** mean) space between tracert and the www. hit return and you will be given some thing like:-

"1 7ms 5ms 10ms 77-**-***-*.cable.ubr07.blac.b**ey****r" i get 9 of these you may get more or less

after that type "ping 77.**.***.* -n 100" then hit enter (where the ** are you put what ever number you get there on line 1)

what it does if you don't alread know is ping your connection 100 times the more you put after the -n is how many pings it will do, mine are like this i will get 7.7.7.7.6.6.7.7.7.8.8.8.5.5.6.10.10.12.544.678.887.8.7.7.8. where the ping goes high is where i lag in games very bad and causes the game to end saying "host has ended the game". i get bad rep for it but if i ended the game i wouldn't be still in the lobby (cod4). your pings shouldn't be any higher than the 20's if there are you will lag in games.

OK mine just been installed and the speed fluctuates like a bitch between 40 and wait for it ......... 60 meg. Not tested the wireless yet but they have sent me a D-Link router. Have heard that the Netgear ones are the best but I'm quite happy atmo

I got 50 meg fitted and its pants, the best i get is like what normanji gets (around 34mb) now the guy who installed it was getting 50 meg showing from the virgin server with his laptop but only 34 on my machine, i was also getting 30 ish on the wifes machine, both were doing 1.6 up, the cables from the router to the pc's were checked and were ok, he even replaced my wireless dongle with an rj45 lead and still no improvement, he was here for a couple of hours trying to figure out what was wrong, in the end he said it was something on my pc that was throttling the download, he said something similar abt the wifes machine, to eliminate this i installed xp onto a clean drive and then ran a test,, i still got around 34mb, now i'm down to around 30, so although its a slight impovement over the 20 meg i had i'm still not getting 50mb like the installer was with his laptop, i even put my brothers laptop inline and was getting 30mb.
so now i know there aint anything throtling the download as it only had xp installed, so it beats me why i cant get 50mb, well i'm going back to 20mb as that at most time will max out around 25mb,, unless anyone has any ideas on what else i can try.

i got 50meg installed last month or so and i couldnt be happier, i get 50 meg constant no probs

they gave me a netgear WNB2100 with free wireless dongle in the box, this was shrink wrapped so came direct from netgear and had nowt done to it by VM, im sure i read they fuck with some routers.

anyway i aint even plugged the router in, im still using my old one as i dont use nowt wireless so dont really need it, i only took it as it was free and it was INCLUDED, the guy didnt have it down on the sheet, so i said ok then m8 dont install nothing at all coz ill never get it if i ring them, anyway he gets on the blower and they said NO dont give it to him, so he rings someone else and they said yes after he told them i said dont install it.

so alls good and i aint paying any more to get it as 50meg is now included in the vip packege i currently get which included the HD V+ box aswell, so 50meg free for me im happy lol.

oh they DID charge £80 though, saying something about an activation feee blah blah

Got 50mbs installed the other day there. So far Im getting 5.9meg per sec off newsgroups. Takes an average 20mins to download an Xbox 360 IS0 and double the time to burn it
