Xbox 360 MS to Block 'unauthorized' Xbox 360 Storage Devices with new Update

    From majornelson.com:

When Preview Program members start receiving the Xbox 360 system update next week, one of the changes is that unauthorized Memory Units will no longer work with the Xbox 360. If you've moved your profile or saved games onto one to "back it up," you'd better move it back onto an authorized Xbox 360 storage device prior to taking the update. If you continue to use an unauthorized Memory Unit after the update, you will not be able to access your stored profile or saved games.

If you need help identifying officially licensed Xbox 360 storage devices or accessories you can read more about the licensed accessories program on Xbox.com
It's unsure if they mean devices like Datel's MAX Memory or homemade Xbox 360 HDDs, but I guess we can assume they will try to block both. There's no 'stealth' what-so-ever with home-made 360 HDDs so it would be pretty easy for MS to detect them. Back to paying 150usd for a 40usd 120gb 2.5" SATA drive with a fancy case?

Great, my 360 that's never played decides to red light last week when using the HD-DVD add-on, now my 120GB homemade HDD is going to stop working too...

Why would they do that? Surely they have no legal right to do so as making a bigger storage device can't be against any T&C's, it's not as though people do it to allow the playing of backups or anything dodgy.

Aren't there laws regulating interoperablity for things like this?

    Surely not?

Having USB on a 360 would then seem pretty pointless.

no way this will affect flash drives, MS want the Xbox to be the main media hub in a home, this would be a ridiculous move by MS. I should imagine this only applies to hacked hdd's and possibly the deal extreme ones, although like you say that would be harsh on those that purchased.

M$ probably can't see the hdd security section, but have collected the copy hddss.bins numbers and plan to ban that particular bunch of numbers, so all the clones from HK etc to stop working.

I read they did a similar thing with banned console id numbers incoperated in an update so that banned consoles couldn't back up games on to the hdd.

    just my 10 pence worth.

    I still don't understand why they'd give a shit about custom HDD's.
