i really don't think you understand the implications of match making instead of a server browser. unless the match making software is really good, you will get lumped with people of similar rank, but not necessarily of a similar geographical location. this will effect ping times etc, you won't get as good experience as if you were playing on a local dedicated server.

also the customisation and mods is a big thing. unless map packs are frequent, which they are not, mods are something on the pc side which really give a game a decent lifetime.

finally, the impact this will have on clans and game servers i would imagine to be quite significant. having your own server, running 24/7 is a good way for attracting players etc, while allowing an easy place for members to congregate. while they haven't released details yet on the match making, even if private games are allowed, it will not be as good or as flexible as the current system!

to sum up, this really is nothing to do with cheating!!! alot to do with control, and making money, as this system will allow for easier control on DLC and charging for it via steam. while i wouldn't have minded paying for DLC on the PC I think they can come up with a better solution than this.

    lol... another pearler mate...

    Does it fuck!

I can't see them having much choice but to back down and allow dedicated servers tbh. The clan communities (which make up a large proportion of their gamerbase) will stick to COD4 until they sort it out. Fucking greedy cunts...

Rubbish, I always say that pc gaming is better than 360 gaming online and one of the main reasons is that you have high quality connections to dedicated servers. Its rediculous that they are making such a backwards step. What about things like host advantages for who ever is hosting a game? they have a ping of 0 and we don't? I've never liked match making and never will!

Can we get a link to the petition. And will it make a difference considering that its so close to the release date?

Yes, it hasn't worked very well on the recent Op Flashpoint 2, which has a similar P2P match making system. Lots of laggy play, time outs etc. Even if they introduce host migration to solve the problem of the host disconnecting I cannot see how they will solve the lag issue or the player number issue. On the back of the Op Flash 2 box, it says the host needs 3 mbit upload to handle 32 player games...how many people have that and are local in the UK!?

Its fine for 4 player coop but outside of that flash point is rubbish online. Every developer seems to be trying to find ways of getting more and more money out of consumers. I wouldn't be suprised if we had to pay for ingame content as well on pc.

no point, Infinity Ward (the creators) have seen the petition, and dont care, their standing behind their crap.

also ive got Op Flashpoint 2, ive played maybe a dozen games hosted by australians, room filled with only australians,
so far the max amount of players we could get in a room was 4vs4 and thats without lag, any more ppl, it aint worth playing, takes anywhere from 20sec to 2min just to reload

they might release a server browser for the current system, which would be marginally better, but i doubt they will take notice of the petition even though itś over 120,000 signatures last time i checked.

i can just about hold out for the new battlefield game...it better be good!

Operation Flashpoint preorder cancelled and now MW2 because of this issue and I share your pain in holding out for Battlefield Bad company 2. Its out March 5th and its one game which is going to have dedicated servers plus the game is no console dumbdown. Cant wait tbh.

Info Re: Dedicated servers ditched for COD:MW2 on the PC!

Seems IW are on a roll with p****ing PC gamers off ...

Infinity Ward has waited until the last minute to reveal that the PC version will now only support 18 players.

Infinity Ward has waited until the last minute to reveal another snippet of information that will likely dismay PC gamers who are otherwise looking forward to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - this time involving the player count.

While previous PC games in the Call of Duty franchise have supported 32 players, the new version will fall in line with the console version and support only 18 players.

The comments came in a Best Buy Live Chat (via Eurogamer), where Infinity Ward's Mackey McCandlish confirmed that the maximum player count for online matches has been slashed.

According to Infinity Ward a cap of 18 players makes the game much easier to balance when it comes to map sizes, perks, classes and challenges.

The fact that it makes map sizes easier to balance is an important point, as the introduction of IWNet means there will no longer be user generated content for the game - so no huge maps.

Many PC gamers are feeling increasingly neglected by Infinity Ward judging by comments in our forums, with the developer clamping down on dedicated servers, user mods and now player counts too - though Infinity Ward says it's all for the best.

The game itself launches on November 10th, but until then you can let us know your thoughts in the forums.
