Nice, water cooling i'm guessing. Quite a high voltage mind.

I have had a bit of a problem overclocking.
I bought an athlon 2500xp which has unlocked multiplier and also got the asus motherboard which supports 400 fsb. Also got some pc 3200 ddr memory which supports fsb.

Anway, the maximum I can get it to run at is 1.84ghz (which is what the processor should do anyway)! Anything after this and it simply either doesn't boot or just crashes when trying to load windows! I have fine cooling - never gets above 40'c due to a massive fan on the board! - Also have three fans in the case to aid cooling. My cpu fan is able to take up to 3400xp.
Also, it seems to fail when I try and set it to 400 fsb doing the same as above. It only seems to like 333fsb, even though the RAM chip and Motherboard support 400fsb.

Does anyone have any advice on what I could try? I know the cooling ain't a problem and from what I have gathered so far from reading up, the components I have are ideal for overclocking!

John Keymer - You will probably need to increase the vcore and possible vdimm voltages to get more speed. As you increase the speed of a CPU it typically requires a bit more juice to keep it stable. Try increasing the vcore one notch at a time until it stabilises.

Remember too that raising your FSB raises the CPU speed as well. As the CPU is unlocked, drop the multiplier to get the right speed (166 to 200FSB is a pretty big jump in a oner).

What would you set it at then? I was setting it at 1.175 (if I remember correctly) - I don't wanna set it too high and blow the poor thing up!
The reason I was using a hig multiplier, is that it works fine on 166 * 12.5 (1.84ghz) so there ain't much point using a multiplier less than 9 as it will be decreasing the speed, rather than increasing! :coffee:

Cheres ofr the advice - will await your reply about the voltages and then have a play!
I found that I could get it up to 3200, but then it would randomly restart. Wasn't overheating as I checked this!

You won't blow anything up m8, providing you've a decent PSU. The reason I was talking about the multiplier is that if say you're running an 11 multi on a 166FSB, that's 1826. Now, if you then set the FSB to 200 (and didn't change the multi) that would be 2200, which the chip won't manage without more juice, that's when you'd drop the multi down.

As far as voltages go, it's trial and error really. As I said, increase gradually until it's stable (use Prime or something to test stability), then once it's stable, increase the FSB a few notches. You want to find the best trade-off between FSB/Multi and voltage/heat.

Remember that as you increase the FSB you may need to give the memory a little more voltage, depends how good it is really.

My XP-2500M is sitting quite happily at 2.4Ghz (200x12) 1.775v 24/7, temps in the mid 40s under load. I've had it up to 1.95v for testing purposes. But it's heat that kills CPUs, not voltage.

Upped the voltage, and now just onna have to see how long we stay stable for!
Need a game or something that will max out the processor!

Gaming will work, but for best stability test over a period of hours, run Prime95 torture test. That will stress the CPU/Memory and you'll find out pretty quick if it's stable or not.

    Hi,
I run the test on "torture test" and all I got all the time was "Illegal Summout - Possible hardware failure" consult readme.txt restarting test

My computer didn't crash or anything though, but I assume thi is not good news!

Any sort of error reported by Prime indicates it has not generated the expected result and the system is unstable. Up the voltage a notch or drop the speed slightly. If you can pass the Torture test for more than an hour you can consider that reasonably stable. More than 12 hours and it should be rock-solid.

You can test just the CPU by selecting the 'small FPU' test IIRC. Remember that the normal torture test stresses both CPU and memory, so it may not be the CPU.

Currently running Tualatin Celeron 1.1 GHz @ 1.466, been 100% stable for at least a year, and beats a 1.8 p4 :thumbs Bitch of a pin mod to get it in this old m/b though, the fiddliest thing I've ever done, had to do it twice to get the vcore up :grr:

Well I decided it was time to upgrade my parents PC as the CPU was only an old XP 2000+ T'bred and I had managed to find a customer to palm this old CPU onto .

I bought a cheap Amd Sempron 2300+ 1.583ghz 256kb Cache FSB333 Retail Boxed Processor with 3 Year Warranty for £36 Inc VAT.

The retail HS&F was used but I removed the stock thermal compound and slapped on some tried and tested Arctic Silver II. The mobo was an old Asus nForce2 and the memory used was standard 256MB Crucial PC3200 (DDR400-CT3264Z40B) {£24.66 Inc VAT}.

Below is the results which are 100% stable and pretty impressive for a £36 cpu & hs+f. No voltage increases were applied. The CPU fan was also 7v modded so that it ran silent (<19dB)

Does 1Mb Super PI in 50 seconds which is pretty impressive considering the price.

So if anyone is looking to build a cheap yet fast 32-bit PC then I would heighly recommend the Sempron with a cheap nForce2 mobo.
