If you've jailbroken your phone then just follow this guide

    http://www.digital-forums.com/showthread.php?t=567667

Otherwise, yep I think you're going to have to pay, unless you're on firmware 3.0 in which case I still believe the old provider hack at help.benm.at works.

    or you could use PDAnet
    http://www.sendspace.com/file/b0gcfb

    Install Instructions:
    - Remove any existing versions of PdaNet
    - Reboot
    - Install from deb file above
    - Reboot

I just tried it and it works, my 3GS is a wifi router aswell, gives you the choice to use cable aswell if you install the client to your pc

pdanet sucks cos you have to create the wifi network on the laptop or whatever you are connecting to. No good if it's a game/pda/whatever

    mywi is much better

If you are going to use it regularly than pay for it, but I have no need for tethering as I have two 3G dongles, I just wanted to see if the free option worked, which it does. I was just trying to give skinflints like myself a free option. Pdanet tethers perfectly on my 3GS

it's not really a free option. it's just cracked. There are similarly cracked miwi installs about too (don't ask!) and given the choice, miwi gets my vote by a mile.

Cracked=free in my book, ive done a bit of searching and there no longer is a free/cracked working miwi as they have sorted the bypass in the licensing, thats why I posted a free/cracked option.
Im sure miwi is better but a lot of people just dont want to pay otherwise there would be no need for Appulous or the 'iPhone/ Touch App Store' section on this forum

well that's an entirely different discussion. There is a 'free' working myfi about. Personally, I paid for it.

To fix that go to the wifi settings, select your hotspot then hit renew lease

After installing it again and a few reboots i can stop it broadcasting constantly but I still cant get it to show and web pages even after a renew lease it gives a ip and a subnet mask but that's it.

I'm online right now using those settings (3GS running 3.01). Works a treat here on a ship in the middle of nowhere! I'm just keeping an eye on the data counter so O2 don't go daft about 'fair usage'

yes im using the http://help.benm.at/ settings on 3.0.1 3g.
Im curious as to why the apps are recommeded above.

Does the http://help.benm.at/ and commcentre not work on the 3.1.2 3g?
