    Default Cat Wee Smell

    Weird one...
We are getting what smells like cat urine coming from the corner of our lounge which is beginning to drive us nuts...

We don't own a cat and no cats have had access to the room, over the past couple of weeks i've pulled the laminate flooring up and the floor boards to investigate but it has turned up nothing.
I've also replaced the wall plug socket thinking it might be causing the smell.
The smell seems to be intamitant and we just can't seem to find what is causing it.

Has anyone else had a similar problem?

Yeah lol but the wife can smell it too...

It could well be damp wakadoo but it doesn't smell like it and the smell comes and goes from one hour to the next,i know the smell of damp well due to working on houses that are and this smell is very much like cat wee and when you can smell it it's strong..

Some one said rats so that was the reason i pulled up the floorboards and some else said they had a plug sockect which was shorting out that gave off a similar smell to cat wee so thats why i replaced that.

    I'm at a loss

Waiting for someone to say buy a cat

What about mice? Could be a dead mouse somewhere? They stink as they decay!!

My ma lives near a field and she used to get them under the floorboards all the time. So she resorted to poisoning them, but that just caused them to slowly die and decay under the boards creating a fecking awful smell!!
    We all make mistakes sometimes

We get it now and again in our front room...

After much investigation we have discounted rats etc. In our case its something to do with water comming underneath the wooden floor. The ground below the floorboards is actually concreted, so it sometimes pools with water when its really wet... and smells of cat pee.

In our case the smell usually goes after a few hours or so.

I think i might pull the floor boards up again and have a good scout around, what made me think that it wasn't coming from under the floor was there was no smell what so ever when i lifted the boards just that dusty smell ya get...

something to do with water comming underneath the wooden floor
It's a three storey house and the kitchen is underneath the lounge but all the pipe work for the central heating runs up the same corner but the combi is not loosing pressure so can't see it been water related well combi water related anyways.

I'm sat here now in the same corner and their is no smell what so ever...

Thanks for the input lads i will let you know if i work out what it is

Had the same problems mate in my hallway, strong smell of fish would come and go, tried everything from paper and paint to new hall carpet. turned out to be an old light fitting, the small plastic fitting that holds the bulb in place would heat up and stink the place out.

    Well the smell has gone...
There was an old four way plug socket in the corner which we have thrown away and we have also replaced the bulb sockect and the smell seems to have gone

It's been 3 days now and the wife and i havent smelt it so it was either the 4 way or the light bulb socket so many thanks for all the help especially jkyle42 for putting us on the right track...

    Did you sort this?/

Did it smell like copydex glue (from school) more like a fish smell.

If so its probably a loose connection in a socket / light / switch etc. They are designed to smell like this
