    Nope. If you have a V3 PS2, you need a V3 laser. V4 PS2 V4 laser, etc etc.

The original lasers in the V3 and V4 PS2's before the 'R' versions came out aren't anywhere near as good as the current R V4 and V5 lasers.

    Ill second that.

I sold my version 3 to get a version 5 knowing that the laser is alot better than previous ones, dvd-r's perform alot better with this new laser.

v3 lasers seem to give u the lipsync prob on dvd movies (speech is not in synch with the picture) but the v5 laser seems to be better and u dont get it.

Yeah, it's just a better design all round in the V5 lasers. Also, alot of V3 and V4 PS2's (the original ones before the 'R's) couldn't read onto the second layer on many DVD's. A message would come up saying it couldn't read it, so you had to restart the whole thing and skip past that chapter. I don't think the any of the R model lasers have this prob

V1, 2 and 3 PS2 use the same lens (called small lens)

V4 and V5 use the same lens (called high lens)

V5 lens have been greatly improved.

Correct me if i'm wrong, you can put a high lens in all versions but you can't put a small lens in a V4 and V5.

    Hope this helps

Does this mean I could acquire a V5 laser from new machine and drop it into my V3 as replacement?

i dont think you can simply unplug a v5 laser unit and plug it into a v3.

the DVD drive unit has different ribbon connectors if i remember correctly. You may be able to dissmantle the DVD drive and swap over just the actual lens parts. if you see what i mean.
