New phone & contract

Got a chance for new contract & phone. Currently using an Omnia on Vodafone, but the coverage is terrible i.e. cant use at home as no network coverage - semi rural area so piss poor coverage, may also be the crap phone. My lads Orange phone has much better reception.
As the contract is up I can choose any network & any phone.

Need internet, email access as used a lot for business. Also needs to be user friendly - have had Nokias for years, this was first move away and not very impressed.

Is the i-phone any good as a phone rather than a fashion item?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

yep the jesus phone really is crap a one specific thing but does everything really well and as for ease of use dont think there is a simpler handset to use
