Default Telephone ringing sound driving me nuts

Every now and then i get a ringing sound like a telephone followed by what sounds like a old till opening (dinglingling ching, sorry only way i can describe it) and its driving me potty, when this happens a small icon appears in the taskbar but only for a split second but this time i was lucky to grab a screenshot, Anyone know what the hell this is ? It only starting happening after i installed k-lite codec pack, i uninstalled it but the sound is still there but the icon dosnt appear..

    TIA

You'd be better getting a list of all your running processes and post it on here. Its hard to identify what that is from the screen shot i've googled around but couldn't find anything.

I've never really used the k-lite codec pack for a long long time. I'd just use VLC player these days as it plays everything out of the box. Also heard good things about media player classic.

If you get the running processes I'll see if i can help. (ctrl + alt + del to see processes)

That icon is for a codec, it comes up when you play a file in a media player. Like a divx in WMP.

Dunno about the sound tho. That could be to do with anything, some sort of notification. One thing you could try if you have no idea whats making the sound, is search your hdd, for wav files and see whick one makes the noise, then delete it or replace with 0 byte file.

Bit of a dirty thing to do, but without more info or knowing what is making the sound, you may be a bit stuck. Don't think anything in the k-lite codec pack makes a noise/notification. But the icon is a codec one.

The sound is totally random, it can happen even when theres no browser open, Ive found out the icon is ffdshow which is part of the k-lite codec pack, but uninstalling it only stops the icon appearing, the ringing sound is bloody loud too and makes me jump out of my skin because you never know when its going to do it.

Heres the processes if it makes any sense to anyone.

I'd say it could be one of the message things you have...

    AIM
    MSN

    Check settings for notifications etc

the ffdshow icons is coming up because it's codec is playing the sound clip, but ffdshow isn't causing the sound to play so is not directly responsible.

try a search on your windows drive of the most common audio file types, WAV, MP3 etc.. limit the search to files less than 1Mb to narrow the search down a little, hopefully there won't be too many results.. play the files from the seach results, when you come accross the annoying one, delete it.

Okay looking at your process list and after chatting to some work buddies it seems like its got to be one of your chat programs thats causing this random ringing sound. Something must be loading the ringing noise so deleting the wav file is definitely not the best solution here.

I've used msn messenger and I've never heard a ringing noise from it. I can bet that its AOL AIM messanger thats causing these issues. There doesn't seem to be anything out of the ordinary on this process list and something must be launching the sound.

why not. speaking from personal experience (I am an IT techie, my m8's consult me), I say the worst that can happen is the program responsible will throw up an error message about not being able to load the sound, then at least you'd know which program it was and can look into options to disable sound or uninstall..

didn't your m8 tell you custom sounds are available accross all IM apps Oj? at least it will give the op a difinitive answer too. wouldn't supprise me it it was something to do with AOHell too, as most of AOHell's software is piss poor.

I had forgotten about this thread, First part you mentioned makes sense now you explained it, Turns out it was AIM but i couldnt find the actual sound file anywhere, Disabling all sounds in AIM didnt help So i uninstalled it and installed an older version and its stopped...thank god cos it was driving me crazy.

malwarebytes isn't a anti virus scanner m8, malwarebytes is for the removal of spyware etc and should be complimented with a descent anti virus program

Clue is in the name Malwarebytes "Anti Malware". It will not get rid of viruses (virui?).

I use it, but never bother with the realtime scanner stuff. Used to use NOD32 as antivirus but that's gone too bloaty now as well. Best bet is to use Microsoft Security Essentials. It's free and gets on with the job. Then if you have any weirdness going on do a further scan with MBAM.

I don't like loads of things running all the time. Scanners, updaters and all that jazz get removed pretty quick!
