Volvo S40 Service light !!

Hello there,

I have just serviced my Volvo S40 but my service light on the dashboard keeps coming on. Is there anyway of resetting the service light without taking it to the dealers or has it got to be plugged up to a laptop at the dealers.

I was told by a mobile mechanic that from 1998 onwards the cars can only be reset by Volvo – but I’m sure there’s a way around it. My Volvo is Year 2000. And also if I do reset it without taking it to dealers, would the onboard computer know when to trigger the service light back on next year or after 10,000 miles which ever comes first, or has that got to be programmed in with a laptop ?
