i got one here and the resister is already connected
but has not been modded by anyone
and was new from shop
BUT
the its connected to other side of board instead
and but to same points and also 10k resistor

According to some ppl at http://216.127.72.24/cgi-bin/ikonboa...=ST;f=5;t=2592 this mod has no effect.
why dont ppl try things for themselves anymore... according to some ppl my tweak has no effect, but for others it had improved reading immensly... The same for this.. The only way for these things to be proved or disproved is for ppl to actually try them
try it for yourself and then report back

I get your point. However, since I'm skilled at soldering, I need to take my xbox to a modchipper and have him fix(?) my DVD drive for money. And these guys aren't cheap. I'd like to be able to estimate my chances on success before spending money and/or damaging my drive. A technical explanation of the dvd mod would be of some help, including the factors that a succesful dvd mod depends on.Originally posted by maltloaf

o.k i,ve tried this mod now and with no effect, i,e ajusted the laser from 800 - 1600 and still will not read copied dvdr. what ever this mod is for its not what we think (I PRESUME) I,ve got another x-box here that i,m swapping the drive and its back to the drawing board. I must have a really bad laser as it will not even read neo now. Just as a matter of adveritsing i went to the computer show today and the sellers of enigma state that this chip enables all x-boxs to read all media including the bulk paq. I asked what they meant by this and the trouble myself and others are having, And Surprisingly enough they blamed it to bad instulation of the mod chip and quite quickly moved me away from there stall. LOL
I tried this mod on my "resistor fitted as oem" xbox. Iv'e been havin a few problems with DVD-R's and Some DVDRW's. I moved the pot from 1482 to 1650 and it's now reading disks that it had previously had rejected.
So far princo(white top), Traxdata(purple top) and Datasafe(bluetop) DVDR's are working fine. I had also been having a problem with Datasafe DVDRW's(yellow/black top) but these seem to working now also. As are Princo (white top) DVDRW's which have gave me no trouble from the beginning

Silly question but how does increasing the resistance at the pot increase the voltage at the laser. surely it should be decreased ? or is that a bit to simple.

yes it is, it depends how the circuit is wired. there are several ways of doing either.

I noticed whilst tweaking the pot on my rom drive that the lens seems a bit grubby, like it had been rubbed by a finger maybe in the manufacturing process. Do you think its safe to clean this with a bit of cloth or is there any coating on the lens i should be aware of that should make me think twice before cleaning it?
dont use cloth or anything... if you MUST try cleaning it, use one of the good quality cleaning discs, or better still a little lightly blown air

O.K guys i,ve just fitted a new dvd rom dive in my box (Original Drive I Aquired) And this one has not been opened, I still have trouble with neo dvd and bulk paq , But for a matter of intrest and i dunno why this makes a difference but i tried disks without putting labels on them and hey presto they all boot bulk paq as well, This is working for me now and i am unsure why but it works, I,ll keep the labels off now. I don,t know if this is going to work for all but its worth a try. I would like to know and i dare say we will find out how long these lasers are going to last reading back up disks as not even dvd lasers last that long reading cdr/dvdr.
if you have trouble with neo dvd then your laser is WAY out dudeOriginally posted by Falcon

First...maltloaf thanks for the tutorial.
Now for the question:
About how far did you rotate the pot before you saw results?
So far I have roated the pot about 1\4 turn and have not seen much difference in my ohms readings.
Did you turn alot farther than that, I just dont want to screw up it up!
Thanks.
If you have turned the pot a quarter of a turn m8 you reading should of drastically changed , What points are u measureing from. That much turn is not usually needed
I am reading from the center of the pot and (like the pics and diagram show) the small square point to the left of the pot (the top one).
I turned it in small increments and after each turn I boot up and tried a few of the discs that were giving problems.
And a a couple of them still give me he "dirty disc error".
I'll probably just re-burn those and try playing them again.
Should I rotate the pot back a little?
I really dont want to burn out the laser (is that possible?)
I would put the pot back to its orig position, what is the test meter set on , Whats the meter reading.
AFter getting a little freaked out last night (I all of sudden got the RED blinking light and the Xbox wouldnt boot). I opened the system up reattached a wire that was loose and turned the pot back to the original position.
I then remeasured the ohms and ended up only turn the pot less than an 1\8 of turn. It seems to be reading DVDRs a little better but I still have a couple that wont load all the time (when the finally load I eventually get the dirty disc message). I'll just attribute that to cheap media.
I think that I'll just leave it the way it is and try another brand of media (the one that I have are unbranded) and see what happen before adjusting the pot again.
