Attention Xbox pot tweaking tutorial :)

After some wondering and a little look and then a heads-up from Mookie, I had a go at tweaking the pots in my own 2 xboxes

Here is my initial tutorial... pics/updates to follow

    1. Take drive out of xbox (if you installed a mod, you know how to do this)

    2. unclip plastic bracket - the 2 plastic clips are to the rear of the drive.

    3. pull off metal grounding piece - just slips off

    4. remove 2 screws in the lid of the drive (there are only 2)

    5. push in plastic clips to allow the lid to come off

    6. take out the 2 torx screws at the back of the drive (T10)

    7. Ease off the bottom of the drive being careful not to damage the connectors at the back.

    8. Undo the screws in the drive PCB.

    9. Unclip the 2 ribbon cables, done by sliding part of the connector away from the cct board. (It may be easier for the laser emitter end to be done.

    10. Move the circuit board out of the way, it will still be connected by 2 small wires but dont worry about that, you just need the room

    11. looking from underneath, on the laser unit itself, you will see a pot on the bottom left of the pcb.

    12. Scratch the resin off CAREFULLY, the pot can be easily damaged.

    13. Measure between the TOP LEFT and the screw of the pot.

    14. Turn the pot anticlockwise until the meter measures 950ohms.

    15. re asseble

    16. test

    17. If the drive is still not perfect, decrease the ohm value in 25 ohm steps until it is. I would suggest that you do not go much further than 850 ohms as I noticed the drive becoming noisy after this.

now reads ALL my DVD-r flawlessly and even some CD-r

NO RESPONSIBILITY IF YOU STUFF UP YOUR XBOX DOING THIS

comments welcome - pics to follow

    cheers,

    maltloaf

    UPDATE

between my 2 boxes, the best values are 890 on one and 930 on other so i think i was right in saying to start around 950

having said that, neither of my boxes were the fussy ones, so I'd really like some feedback from someone with one of those

    cheers,

the best tool is a dedicated tweak tool, failing that the smalles non-magnetized screwdriver, but be very careful...

If you just break the pot, it should be possible to replace it

U didn't waste any time with your Tweaking Maltloaf! I knew you were the right man for the job!

I'm sure Enigmah.com would like to have a full pot tweaking guide with pics on their website to help out some of the more unfortunate X-Box owners.

I shall have to get some people to do a little testing from your info!

    Good Work my friend!

No its not a joke. Since I have yet to recieve a modchip, I can't really tell if I had a shitty dvd rom or not. Originals boot perfectly fine. But the defeats the purpose as I would think there shouldn't be problems with originals.

If there's way in telling, ie when/where its made/serial number etc or if there's no way to tell other than to mod it then try it then just say so.

I finally agree with Rapt0r on something!!! My v5 PS2 with ******* didn't like Verbs, but loves Princos.

But as for 31 Wires not working...Oh do they ever...

    Each to his own eh
