I went ahead and tested a pioneer 106s in my xbox WITHOUT a modchip. The drive is recognized by the xbox and will go to the browser menu.

Of course backups and original games did not work, but interestingly audio cds and dvd movies did not work as well even though those media have nothing to do with getting a signal code into the xbox.

Once I get my modchip next week, I'll post results, I'm sure it will work then since all the people who have tried this dvd rom drive swap have modchips in their xboxs.

OKY let me start first of all i have a mod chip in.

to start from afresh. My 3 year old daughter decided to screw my xbox dvd drive and shove all sorts in. I phone MS and asked them if they could replace my dvd drive and they said yes if i sent it back to them and they charded me £135.00 for it . I asked if they could send me a new dvd drive and they said no only they can do it ... (are they mad).

Any how they then siad if i wasnt willing to pay £135.00 and still have no warrenty and no garentie i would have to get a new xbox.

So i told them to get lost and after reading your aritcal about a pioneer working on the xbox. I took out my £35.00 el cheepo dvd drive of my computer and stuck it in my xbox.

Well did i jump over the mon or what it works. I have stested it on the following.

ALL types of media cdr (and brand) - CDRW (any brard) - USA games (copys)- PAL games (copys) - DVDR (any brand)- DVDR (any brand).

The dvd drive is just a cheap LG model and works fine.

Just thought id let you know this for your info. I can take pics if you like.

But hell it seems that ms shold have sold me a new drive in the first place.

p.s thank you very much for such a informative and grate web site.

doesnt have to be pioneer, mine was LG, but be aware that AFAIK, no one has made an original game work in a replaced dvd drive yet

yep i agree ive been playing with mine a little. manged to get DOA to boot 1 once after puttingf it in and out about 15 - 18 times .. And then it crashed when the actual game started.

So i presume it may need a chip or some thing like that on the dvd drive ... dunno lol...

doesnt the yellow cord the configuration jumper that plugs into the back of the original x box dvd drive power the xbox eject button why not buy another with the correct amount of pinouts that will plug into a pc dvd-rom drive

this may be stupid but would we be able to change the laser unit in the xbox?instead of changing the dvdrom then we would still have the eject reset.

very unlikely that it would, considering the laser units of different drives have different shapes and usually different pinout/wiring too.

i thought with IDE cd/dvd drives there was 1 pin on the 40 pin connector that controls the eject function so what we would have to do is seperatly connect this 1 pin to the correct pin of that special connector MS has made and hopefully it would work

PS. i dont have an xbox just yet so i cant try this
