    Changing DVD-Rom in Xbox

Originally posted by Doc On www.worldxbox.co.uk

Well I have an Xbox fitted with a Modification device so earlier on today I changed the DVD-rom drive in the Xbox to see what would happen.

Drive used was a Pioneer DVD- 105SZ.
First of all I had to set the drive to Slave and since the original drives power connector is different I had to use a splitter cable for it to power the Pioneer drive, so I took the power from the Hard Drive connector then attached the IDE cable from the original Drive to the Pioneer.
Results were that the Xbox loaded all the cdr's I had that the original drive would not load, also the cdr games loaded much quicker due to it being a 40x reader and the dvdrs seemed a bit faster too hence the 16x DVD reader.
The only problems I had was that it did not load any original games and that the Power connector on the original drive must include the eject signal because when pressing the eject button on the Xbox the Pioneer didn't eject but the original Drive did, also when u inserted the backup you had to power the machine OFF and then back on to boot the game as when u pressed the eject on the Pioneer it ejected the disc but the game was still playing.

Here is a link to some media tested on an Xbox also I have managed to get the Vivastar Branded Cdrs to work without any problems. You can ether get em from Argos for a large amount of money or maybe try here

Lets hope someone makes a DVD-rom drive for the Xbox that runs any kind of media

Great.. People are finally starting to fiddle with their XBoxes! This drive swap method looks like it could prove nice.

Any chance of some timings of loading games?

i swapped mine out for a LG8160B dvdrom

    Same results really..

    All dvd-r, dvd-rw, cd-r, cd-rw worked
    originals did not.

what really amazed me was the speed.. cdr games loaded like lightning !

I'm gonna have a poke about to see if i can do something about the eject.

don't know if this would help any, but in my macintosh G4 the eject button on the drive is disabled so to say and instead you have to use the keyboard to get it to eject. This works with any drive you put in there though.

I guess after re-reading that it doesn't help damn.

Will try too swap mine when i fitted in the modchip i have an 105-SZ too

But could some one with a chip can try a normal cd-rom player if that works too.

Btw i think the eject button must work with a hacked firmware for the cd rom drive, enigmah crew maybe

And also the dvd drive of the xbox has a yellow cables asswel are those the power cables or the audio ?

i have done a quick pinout of the yellow connetor block

    here we go.

    in the setup i found
    4 x 1.7v +
    2 x 5v +
    2 x 12v +
    1 x 3.2v +
    3 x Ground

i presume the 1.7v+ will be audio lines ???

    a little thought ...

has anyone opend the drive and watched an original game disk load ?? do original games still spin the same direction ??

In primo dvd it says the disks are reverse track stamped disks
i was wondering if maybe the drive has 2 sets of 5v and 12v that the polarity can be reversed so that the disk may spin the wrong direction and read the disk correctly ( just a thought) as other ppl say when a pc dvdrom drive is fitted it will not read original games

I think any dvd drive should work, not just the Pioneer. If u get to fix the eject problem it wold very easiyl replace the xboxs drive. And to try and put the xboxs drive in the pc to read the xbox games would be nice too.

since the xbox checks the drive ID and/or firmware, not just any drive will work. the pioneer drive works cause that's what they use in some xboxes, but with modified firmware.
connecting the xbox drive to PC doesn't work at this time either, it'll identify to the BIOS, but is not even detected by windows at all.. as if the drive doesn't exist.

    Default Change Case

I have also tested the x-box with a Samsung and it plays all media , I am wondering if the guts of the roms can be put into the x/box dvd case so we can get them to fit in , Any one tried this yet ???

    it certainly looks possible
